No I did not fry my processor. What I did do is forget to order the Zalman 9500LED from NewEgg, and my parents are assholes and won't let me order it. So, how much OC can I expect to get out of the stock Opty cooler? Or should I just throw the old stock cooler back onto the PC I'm selling and take the XP90 out and put it in the new rig? The person I'm selling it to won't care.

is it the hetasink with heatpipes or the normal one if its the heatpipe one keep it if not xp 90

The Opty stock heatsink is pretty good, I would say on par with the XP-90, perhaps a bit worse but not much.

The stock heatsink with the opty's is supposed to be pretty decent, especially the heatpipes. Will you get as good an overclock vs. the Zalman 9500? I'd lean towards no. The other issue is noise. Granted, it depends on what fan you have paired with that XP-90.

However, a miriad of things go to a decent OC. Clean powersupply, case cooling / airflow management, RAM, decent motherboard, ect, ect.

Opty's have a good trend to be good / better overclockers vs. the 38 - 4800 X2's (Better silicon straining, and heard they have a better memory controller, not sure on that though). However, a wise [H]'er stated once (don't remember who, sorry), "With your CPU your guarenteed it will run at stock speeds. Anything you get via overclocking is a gift."

I think your stock cooler should be about the same as an XP-90.
You might not get as great of an OC as you might be able to get with the 9500, but you can still get something.

Hell of a system you are putting together there, looks like it will make you very happy.

if you cant do much with stock the stock hsf your proc prolly isnt that good anyways or on air for that matter .

i agree...if you only get a small OC on stock, you wouldn't be getting much more on high end air.

water might be a different story...but that IS a whole other story

As it always is with overclocking.

Supposedly, as everyone has said, the Opteron cooler is amazing. I have heard it has thermal dissapation equal to or greater than that of a high-end zalman. Too bad my 146 came OEM, I think it would probably work better than my Blue Orb II... It doesn't work that great (though it is near-silent)

i'm using the stock cooler on my opty 165. for stock, its pretty damn sweet! it uses a copper base a 4 copper heatpipes. the fan can be a little noisey for some, but the stock fan on my 7900GT drowns the thing out....

anyways, it performs almost right on with an XP-90. madshrimps actually did a nice little review on this newer amd stock cooler. read it here:

http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=399

i used AS5 thermal paste on mine, and i replaced the stock amd fan with a sunon. why? well for some reason i could not get any fan control with my asus mainboard so it would never go anywhere near the 5400rpm its supposed to. why not bypass the fan control you ask? well i did. thing is that i needed a good exaust fan on the back of my case. the sunon was great, but WAY to noisey! it was totally irritating! so the sunon on the amd heatsink is very tolerable (for me) and the amd stock fan on my exaust with the speed control bypassed isn't that bad.

for anyone who bought an XP-90 over the stock heatpipe opteron cooler, i'm laughing. however, i don't think it would stand up to that big zalman cooler from what i've seen. that is one sexy cooler!

and yes the noise is irritating me a little. i can tolerate it, but i'm looking into a home brew watercooling setup. just taking my time designing it. i want to have the rads, pump and reservoir in a seperate contained acrylic box. also designing some good failsafe devices on the cheap are slowing me up.

oh by the way, i got my opty 165 up to 2.4Ghz on this cooler. i found it a little too warm at stock voltage - full load was about 67 C. waaaaayyy too much for my liking. i got lucky and was able to drop the voltage to 1.13 and i have not seen load temps above 47 C now. only catch is without any extra voltage 2.4Ghz is my brick wall. the WC will solve that though.

Four copper heatpipes on the stock cooler. Now, there's grey thermal crap on the bottom. Scrape it off and put on AS5?

get a job lol

If we could please stay on the topic of my OCing....this proc is the CCBWE0551UPMW stepping, which I hear is good for overclocking. And a search related to the stock cooler revealed that in testing, the stock AMD cooler running at maximum RPM actually does better than an XP90!

actually yes i cleaned my paste off and used some AS5. funny thing is that it was an accident, its been years since i;ve done a new build so i was thinking it was one of those old crappy thermalpads. tried to 'peel' it off lol. oops.
