So I've started OCing my Opty 170. So far, 2.5GHz is not Prime95 stable but I've never given much of a care about Prime after it whined about my last CPU (2.2GHz->2.4GHz) which NEVER caused an issue in anything I did at OCed speeds. 2.6GHz is logically not Primable either but it runs Doom3 and I'm going to test 3DMark05. More info as I go.

I had mine running stable at 2.5GHz for a long time. I was disappointed with my motherboard temperatures, so I took apart the heatpipes and cleaned the chips, then applied Ceramique. Sadly, now it won't go anything over 2.1 :( I don't know what I did

Wtf? That sucks.

How much voltage? What's safe for an Opty 170 on stock cooler? It's the "good" cooler, that even when I set vCore to 1.4+.1 in BIOS it did not break 35C idle. Even that volt bump isn't enough for Age of Empires III though, the game locks and freezes on the OC. It's not Prime stable either but as I said in my original post I'm not a big fan of Prime because it bitched and moaned about my last OC and nothing ever went wrong in anything I did. Sure, the "extreme situation" argument can be made, but if nothing ever goes wrong in everyday gaming, surfing and chatting I really don't care what Prime says. F.E.A.R., Doom3, Quake4, 3DMark05 and Sandra are fine however.

Anyway, back to my CPU...lol. I have it set to 1.4v + 0.1 (aka 1.5v, the volt settings on the K8N Diamond are weird). It ran Prime stable @ 2.6GHz yesterday for 45 minutes. Temps never break 50C under Prime load. Heck, I never even see 50C on the nV Monitor application. It appears to be stable (running more Prime as I type), but is it safe?

I have my 170 running at 2.5ghz at one notch under default voltage ..the A8N32-SLi mobo's voltage settings with the 1205 bios (with me anyways) doesnt allow me to have exacting control over cpu voltage .. cant get it over 1.45v's ...darn

Got it to 2.6GHz and 3DMark05 of 12k....happiness.

A 2x 7900GTX setup should be getting more than 12k.

That's only like 1.8k more than my single X1800XT

We have same processor as well.

Uhhh, where's the bottleneck? I have non-OCed cards. The proc is at 2.6GHz, 3DMark05 still @ 12k....

memory at 1T or 2T?

other processes running in background? start>run>msconfig ..turn stuff off if you dont want it to start up when you start your computer up

settings on vidcard AA , AS , Quality type ..etc

Well my card is OC'd and my memory timings are tightened up a bit an running 1T, but I don't think memory settings are going to make that big a difference.

Hmm, your score looks like it could be possible with 1 7900GTX, are you sure you have SLI enabled?

Yes I have SLI on, and I set the proper App Profile in Performance and Quality....returning to my original question: is 1.5vCore SAFE for my Opty 170? Temps don't break 48C under Prime95 dual load.

What stepping is your 170?

I have mine at 1.5 Volts but I'm on Water, so I idle at 33 and load at ~40
I have a CCBWE 0551 UDMW and I haven't read a lot of good things about them. I was at 2.5 with my Mem at 250 1:1, 1T, but I was getting crashes in BF2 and CS Source. I just ran MemTest and whuddya know, it was spewing out errors, even though I was Prime Stable. Are you running Prime in Dual Core mode?

I called Mushkin today and they haven't had to RMA any of the Enhanced DDR500. I'm th 1st. Lucky me :D. It's all good. They're next day airing me a set of the Redline which is TCCD that scales even higher for only like 50 bux more. I'm PRAYING that was what was holding my OC back, considering I built this water rig for some heavy loads, and 2500 isn't "heavy" IMO.

Good luck with your CPU bro.

CCBWE0551UPMW, same as yours. It runs @ 2.6GHz Prime for about an hour then errs, but I haven't seen any problems so I figure it's fine (my last CPU Primed for about five minutes then erred, but I never had a problem with the OC). Idle is around 35-37C and load is 48C max. I have a stock Opteron cooler, but it's the one with the quad copper heatpipes so it will outdo an XP90 and some other aftermarket coolers....1.5vCore. But is this safe?

i'd look into upgrading your cooler, although it might be the newer cooler...it's still stock.
pick up a zalman 9500 or a scythe ninja, i bet you can get a better OC.

It won't run @ 2.7GHz with 1.55vCore....and heat is not an issue (max temp of 50C load). And ThreeDee, I have downloaded the program you pointed me to and will use it. Thanks!

unless you are phase change heat is always an issue lol
but if you are happy with your temps go for it

and just so you know sp2004 and prime are pretty much the same thing, if you fail prime you will fail sp2004

just a nicer interface.

I have a CCBWE 0551 UDMW from the Egg (got it last week). These steppings are the worst of the worst. Head over to xtremesys tems.com and you'll see why.

They just don't climb at all. Mine's on water, 32 idle, 44 load, 1.45 volts. I fed it 1.6 for some tests and it didn't make one lick of difference. I'm at 2550 Prime Stable now, 1.45Vcore

I'm ditching this thing as soon as I get the chance.
