The Thermaltake Big Typhoon

The Zalman 9500

Now I currently have a cooler master hyper 6, but on this socket 754 I get like 50C on the cpu, which seems high to me, I dont know if its correct or not, its a MSI Neo Platinum S754 board, I can always use what I have now but the temps seem kinda crappy.

The Scythe ninja, looks like a decent cooler, doesnt look much different from this hyper 6, is it much bigger then this hyper 6?

The Thermaltake Big Typhoon I dont really have any quirks with, its a good consideration of mine, and I would pair it with a nexus or yale fan.

The Zalman I kinda like, I've never owned a zalman hsf before, Ive seen some pictures with the fan and heatsink twirled around in a different direction, is this possible? also is it possible to disable the blue led that comes with the fan, or put a red led on it?

Ive done some research so far on each HSF, but most sites are bias? can someone post their temps or their own considerations on a hSF, maybe something else I have not listed that does a better job?

My new machine btw will be an opteron 146 with dfi ultra d board

I have my zalman 9500 pointing up towards the exhaust near the top. I figured since hot air rises just send it upwards. I highly reccomend the zalman. Keep my processor in sig under 40 degrees full load and idles in the low 30's with a pretty good overclock.

Hyper 6+ has done an excellent job of cooling a number of 146's for me. Last one was running at 2.7ghz on 1.52v, never went above 47c on hours of full load.

I just went from a 148 and an XP 90 to a Scythe Ninja and a 170. The 170 runs about 5C cooler at the same speed and a higher voltate than the 148 did with the XP90.

I would have expected the same thing to happen had you not switched coolers. The single core opty's run hotter than the dual cores, regardless of speed and voltage, generally speaking of course.

really? I thought i had always read that the dual core opterons ran pretty hot.

Ive never heard that....Dual cores have 2 cores, it would only make sense they ran hotter.

My opty 144 @ 2.6ghz idles at 44C and my opty 170 I had idled at 48C.....

I've owned a 144, 3 146's, and they all four ran hotter than my 165 or my x2 3800. If the dual cores got as hot, the extra cache would probably be affected. I can see how you would assume they would run hotter, but trust me, they do not. Oh and btw, your 170 should not idle that warm. Most of the dual core opteron have a max tcase of around 49c. So you really shouldn't put it much over that on full load, my 165 never hit 49c even under hours of strain, and I used my hyper 6+. Because of they dual cores on the same die, the chip is more easily effected by heat.

I have a zalman 9500 on an opty 146 @ 2.9ghz and 1.45v. it keeps the temps to about 32-34C idle (depending on room temp) and 43-45C load (prime95). I havent tried the other coolers you mentioned, but from what i have heard about them I believe they perform about the same, give or take a few *C maybe.

I have a Zalman 9500 on a 4GHz Intel rig, it stays around 48. Scythe Ninjas are very nice too ;)

I have an XP-90 cooling my 146 running at 3.0Ghz. Idle temp is 45C load temp is 50-51C
