Operation: Keychain (56K Watch Out!)

I made my IHS into a keychain, it melted a drillbit... thats how strong the nickle/copper is, or maybe my drills suck?

your drills suck for the speed and metal you were using them on. I have all carbide tipped drills and never have a problem.. Use oil and the drill should have no trouble

Yeah, I have cheap-o-craft.. er Mastercraft drill bits... I took them back and got new ones though :)
Yeah about that oil....

I bought some off-brand titanium drill bits a while back...never had a problem with them. Drill through everything I've ever done just fine, including hardened 3/4" stainless steel, and a chunk of iron plating. Take that back...had one problem...angled the bit on that 3/4" stainless job and it snapped it. so that's prolly not the bits' fault :p

use oil like the other guy suggested. works wonders on tough-to-drill things.

After realising it was an nVidia and not an ATi, we found out that mere flames were no match for the power of the Ultra! So, we went to more "primitive" means....

This made me laugh!

Won't you people get mild lead poisoning from handling those IC's on keychains so often?

can't be any worse than the paint chips we all ate when we were kids can it? :p

Why was the acetylene torch necessary? Feed it a bit more oxygen to get rid of that "dirty" burn/soot. Nice key chain though.... you da man!

Man, thats really neat. I wished we all could have spare GPUs like that lying around to make keychains out of. Oh and you need to RMA that card, send it with a good explanation about what happened (like above). If they take it seriously, and contact you, just point them to this thread. It would be so worth it!

i dont know if this has been said but i reckon all the Ati ppl would be loving those pics for ages :D .

Man, I could make some uber keychains out of a few of the old slot pentium II's that I have :)

Hmm, not a bad idea for the g/f actually, no way she could lose her keys with that thing attached to it.

Hey... I still use my slot 1 P2 300mhz... actually.. I found it in the garbage on Vacation in Ottawa...
Bought DiscoStu's Voodoo 2 SLI for it :)

Why these kind of threads garner so much interest is beyond me.

Nice shop but the guy doesnt seem to know how to use tools.

Already stated, it was used for effect and not actual use. Besides, a torch isn't the most practical way to remove a core from a PCB. :p And his tank was out of Oxygen (how, I have no idea) but the flame worked for the image we wanted....a full blue flame woulda cut thru that card like butter, and wouldn't have looked nearly as cool, imo. Sorry for having fun, mister serious.

Well that card won't fuck with you again.

I may do the same thing with mine, I have a gainward 6800u GS that just spontaneously crapped out a few months back, very similar symptoms, except I never OC'd it, I did cut the double backplane in half so I could use Silencer though, so I figure that voided my warranty.

I've been thinking It'd make a nice trophy, I just never got around to cutting it.

Meh, that or I could just send you my backplate, assuming they're the same.

Make the backplate a keychain too, or hang it from your car mirror...
That reminds me, I used to have a harddrive with a glass window to reveal the platters, it died so I used it as a cup holder.

I would cut off the rest of the PCB and put a hole in one of the corners of the metal. But other than that, it's pwnage.

Hate to bring up old news, but I thought this was worth posting in the same thread.

Friend of mine plans on turning an AMD 486 into a keychain, but tonight outdid even that....sure he used my hardware and it only lasted on his keyring for about 3 minutes, but a well played move none the less. :D Had me crackin' up.
