Developers from various open forks of of Solaris ZFS have come together to create the OpenZFS project. The idea is to ensure cooperation and interoperability between all the platform implementations of ZFS (illumos, *BSD, Linux, and OS X).

On some level I think this was inevitable, with Oracle closing up ZFS, it would have been confusing going forward to have two projects named ZFS, but not be compatible. Hopefully this raises OpenZFS visibility and attracts more users and contributors to the projects.

Who knows, may this will get us block pointer rewrite :D. (Keep the dream alive!)
 
Cool! I think this is a wise choice to collect 100 ZFS developers under one roof. Whats more is that Matt Ahrens, one of the ZFS creators, are in. :)
 
This is good to see. Standardizing the platform should help it move forward through all operating systems, and gain more Linux support/development. This should mean more improvements, and less variation/more portability for drive pools.

I'm curious to see what they do with licensing - CDDL vs. GPLv2 wrt to linux.

that only pertains to oracles ZFS. openzfs has its own copyrights holders.

(openzfs appears to still be using CDDL)

and depending on where the original soruce came from, or was forked from, oracle may still have some say over it. or may not. copyrights are a PITA.

I read that SUN did not require copyright assignment from independent contributors who were working on the project, if that is true then anyone who has contributed code independently owns a copyright of their contribution which they licensed under CDDL, Oracle included.

That also means you can't relicense the codebase without unanimous consent from all contributors. This is the same reason the Linux kernel will never be relicensed from GPLv2, you'd never be able to track down every contributor, and even if you could you'd have to get them to agree to relicense.
