Developers from various open forks of of Solaris ZFS have come together to create the OpenZFS project. The idea is to ensure cooperation and interoperability between all the platform implementations of ZFS (illumos, *BSD, Linux, and OS X).

On some level I think this was inevitable, with Oracle closing up ZFS, it would have been confusing going forward to have two projects named ZFS, but not be compatible. Hopefully this raises OpenZFS visibility and attracts more users and contributors to the projects.
Who knows, may this will get us block pointer rewrite
