Online Game Lagging on Netgear Router

OK, please move this thread if it is in the wrong place but here it is. I have two networks, one at each house (divorced parents). Both were using a Netgear router (model #: WGT624 v.2) If I tried to play any game, lets take Starcraft for example, it only runs smoothly with me and one other person. Whenever there is one additional person it lags like hell. I have both cable and dsl connection so I know it isnt that. I switched one netgear for a linksys and everything worked fine but right now I cannot afford another router and I would like to see if I can get this one to work. So what can I do to get the netgear to work?

When you say it lags when an additional person joins the game, do you mean one additional person at your house behind the same router, or just one additional person online from somewhere else?

I seem to recall Starcraft having lag issues when multiple people play behind the same NATed router.
