Onboard issue with microphone

I have a cheap 3.5mm microphone connected to my onboard (Asrock z68 extreme 3 gen 3) Within about the last 2 weeks I keep getting an issue that its telling me the mic is disconnected from the rear port or something is plugged into the front panel, which neither have happened. To fix the issue temporarily I have to unplug the mic and plug it back in and restart any programs using the mic.

Headphones work fine with no issue while this happens. Driver reinstall didn't fix. Problem is intermittent and not dependent on microphone usage. I'm planning to buy a usb mic to hopefully fix the issue but my main concern is if the onboard audio is dying. Any insight as to whats happening would be appreciated. Thanks.
