On-board audio problem

I am having issues with a Shuttle AN35 ultra with the on-board sound. I have 2 machines and they are both having the same problem.... the problem is most recognizable in Counter-strike, the sound echoes and is all crackily and digitized, also if I am playing an mp3 and lets say open a window with lots of music files in it the sound will sound choppy when the file information is gathered (like artist and track that XP loads)

sounds more like your computer is overloaded... maxing out.

onboard sound, uses memory... (not much, but some), so if the computer is busy loading something, or you are playing a game which is intense on your computer, it's probably gonna stutter some. i dont think it's necessesarily your onboard sound from the way you describe it...

I have XP on both 512mb DDR2700, 128mb g4ti4800, and the latest nvidia nforce drivers

mostly the sound problems are in counter-strike, and you honestly cant say that counter-strike is that intensive, now i CAN get my sound to work properly in counter-strike every once in awhile, but it requires me closing cstrike, opening it back up, and turning on/off the "high-quality sound" .... sometimes it works with either high quality on or off, usually it doesnt, trust me, i've checked my cpu usage charts and whatnot, its not system usage, it does not happen when my system is lagging. I can be in a game in cstrike and just walk through dust and my footsteps echo and fade out all digitzed and crackliy sounding, I get out of the game, change the settings, go back in and it works, then when we change maps it starts over again

I am not on a wireless, it happens both on LAN and on Internet games, its not just cstrike, its it windows too once in awhile, just not as noticably.... i don't know what a southbridge is... how can i check that?

Ive never once had an acceptable onboard sound solution. I see them getting good reviews here at [H] and elsewhere, but whenever i use one, they are a piece of shit.

I hear bootup noises on some, such as the HDD spinning up THRU the speakers. On the one i am using as temporary HTPC until i get an MAudio Revolution, makes theirs weird musical whistling noises when im using DScaler, and other popping noises.

I know this is never the kind of advice people like to hear when they are trying to FIX problems, but id just be looking at getting a proper sound card. Ive found the Live 5.1 to be a great entry level card, especially when using the hacked Audigy2 drivers.

I agree, all integrated sound that I have experienced sucked ass. I am using a Soundblaster Live VALUE and that is also starting to annoy me. I hear a little bit of popping and crackling since I am on a wireless network. I am not sure if the problem will go away if I purchase an Audigy ZS2 but it gives me a really good reason to buy one :D

So if anything, if you can somehow save up for an Audigy card then that will prolly fix your problem.

is your southbridge overheating?

This, and also if you have spyware and/or virii on your computer it can slow your cpu down alot and in-turn fuck up alot of things as well as slow down alot of things.

The nVidia Soundstorm beats the hell out of the Soundblaster Live and has much better drivers than Creative, to boot. It will be released as a PCI card solution sometime this year.

But by the time that gets released, the Audigy ZS2 will most likely drop its price. I agree that there are other SC that perform ALOT better than most of the Creative brand (Their drivers do suck), but at around $60 used or so, the Audigy is not that bad.

Trust me, there are no virii or adware on my computer, the issue has been solved.............................. I bought a sound card, chaintech, I didn't like any of the creative ones on newegg. Chaintech has always been good to me with vid cards so I'll give their audio a try.

In CS the echo issue could be the sound settings.
Turn off EAX and the other 3D sound setting.

The only good onboard sound i've heard is on my nForce2 Deluxe.
It sounds nice, but I use a Audigy 2 Plat anyways. :p

yeah I have the nforce2 chipset for LAN and audio, like I already said, it doesnt matter what my settings, but i have to CHANGE them from good to bad or vice versa and eventually it'll work

FWIW my ICH4 actually seems decent.
Not good, but I have no problems and ok sound.

(Unlike the ancient SB Live also in the computer, that stutters with light load and pops for no good reason)

I have also noticed a problem with Counter-Strike and my onboard sound....but I also had different sound problems with a SoundBlaster Live! Value I had previously.

Just for the record, my onboard sound is an ALC655 codec.

I haven't had any problems with the sound other than Counter-Strike, though.
