Ok well today i cam accross a
dual opteron 250 server with
16gigs of ddr pc 3200ecc memory
dual qudro fx 3450's

I have been using my main rig to run f@h for a few months now but the heat output with my main rigs makes my room get way to warm so ive been shutting it off. My question is how good will that opteron system do with running f&h or will my main rig do more for the 12-16 hours a day it on then the opterons will running 24 hours. The opteron system will be in my basement far from my room so it can tun 24 hours aday lol basement could use some heat.

main rig is
q9450 @ 3.8ghz
8 gigs ddr2
ati 4870x2 2gig card

Updaqte well just went to load the opteron computr and the motherboard is no good so Unless some one has a motherboard that will hold 8 sticks of ram and 2 opteron 250s they could sell me decently cheap in here i dont see this pc getting setup to fold as the only boards i can find online for these parts is gonna cosrt me over $100 granted the research and information people get from all of us folding is worth lifes something you cant put a dollar sign on I just dont have the extra cash to spend to get this system up and running.

I have a dual Opteron 280 system which is running a higher clockspeed due to OCing and equipped with twice the number of cores. I've run it with half the available cores using the -smp 2 flag and it didn't fare well. Typical TPF was about ~20 minutes with most A3 WUs and about half an hour with the slower WUs. This is @2.8GHz not 2.4GHz of your machine.

Suffice to say that your Intel quad-core machine even running a few hours less each day will way outdo your Opteron because it has twice the cores and a 1.4GHz advantage, not to mention a superior IPC. No contest.

I mentioned the following in another thread recently for someone else who asked about a very similar system. If you are very tight on finances and you can find a pair of dual-core Opteron processors for very cheap locally, they are worth the upgrade especially when OCed. Old S-940 dual-core Opterons can be purchased for under $50, if you don't opt for the highest frequencies.

Alternatively, you can find nVidia cards for approximately the same price that will produce thousands of PPD more than dual-core Opterons if you don't mind running the GPU client. However, you'll need to swap out your Quadros since they're not supported by the GPU client. That might not be an option if you still need them.

The GPU client supports your Ati card in your other system but it won't produce much for the additional heat and power consumption to be worth it. More importantly, it will consume a huge portion of the CPU just to run it. If you run the SMP client on your Intel system, it might be best to avoid running the GPU client altogether. Let us know if you have any further questions. Best of luck.
