So, I've upgraded to a swanky new E6300, and want to set up my old PC as an HTPC for the living room. In the process of my upgrades, I've basically ended up with 3 full PCs, and want to give one to my brother to replace the P3-933MHz I gave him at my last upgrade. :) (The P3 rig will either go up FS here, or be used as a simple Azureus machine.)

So, here's the two systems:

AXP 2500+ Barton in an Abit NF7-Sv2 (both quality parts... years ago)
vs.
Celery331 in an ECS P4M800-Pro (Frys' special! DDR/DDR2 & AGP)

I have one KHX-DDR333/512MB and a PQI-DDR400/512MB (had both running @ 360/2-3-3-6 in the AXP). I may add a 2nd DIMM in the AXP rig, or get some DDR2 for the Celery, but right now they each have a single DIMM. I plan to use my aging but useful AIW9600XT for the HTPC videocard, and my bro's GF5200 in whatever he gets.

So, which system will best serve me in an HTPC environment? I would think the Intel, since they lead in multimedia apps, but my benchmark of Nero VCD -encoding had them about the same (~40mins/hr of video). Either will be an upgrade for my bro, so I want the stronger machine for myself :D - but what's what as far as power is concerned? I love my old AXP rig, but the mATX rig would fit better in the livingroom.

Also, should I xpost this to the AMD section?

Well as far as the future goes, you can drop an 805 or a 915 into the intel board, which would be great in an htpc environment.

That's a damn good point, and another point for the mATX rig....
