Old timer with new Questions

I've been out of the loop for quite some time, being a new father (two year old girl), and working 50+ hours a week tends to take a toll. I've got my same pc now for the past five years... besides a mediocre video card upgrade. I'm going to be building a new pc in the next couple days based on quite an improvement. Going to a q6600, iP45, 9800 GTX. I'm only cooling the cpu. I want to build/bay a decent water cooling kit, and I'm not sure what's hot and not right now. I like the H20-120 from swiftech but also looking at a comparable kit (in parts/cooling) from DangerDen. I want to be able to justify the extra$50 from DD so that would be nice. As well I'm kind of skepticle about the pump-on-block scheme. If anyone knows any shootouts camparing this block to others that would be nice.

this was the last time I watercooled, sure ther'll be some guys who can recognize some of the parts!

Is that the Storm G4 block?? That was the best back in the day, and probably is still one of the better ones. I think swiftech built the APOGEE GT off the same design. I would just stick to your old design, i'm sure it will cool just as well as the newer stuff.

With DDR2 ram being cheap nowadays I suggest you pick up either a 1x1GB sticks or 2x2GB (not 4x1gb) to get the best memory timings. It's not necessary but I suggest you get a block for that northbridge too if you want to stretch it over 3.6Ghz..

If your goal isn't to reach that high then an Apogee block, a DD reservoir (1x120 or 2x120) would suffice. To give yourself some headroom for later upgrades (possibly GPU) i'd suggest a D5 vario (if thats out of your budget, then look at a DD-CPX1 which is almost half the price but less power too of course). Other than that it's really up to you what tubing and/or what other blocks you're looking to get.

that's a maze 3 block, on an xp1600 I think. I now have an nforce 2 ultra, xp 2800, and radeon 2400. none of this pc will be used. This will be dedicated to a home security (long story) and media server.

That pic is probably six years old... I no longer have that system. I building a new pc, but gave all the info I was thinking would matter. DDR 2 would be the only option and that will be in the form of Corsair XMS, I didn't think that would matter.

Basically wondering if the appogee drive system is any good for a mild oc and low... low noise. I will be using the papst 120mm fans I still have,

Well the Apogee would work in both a low end and high end watercooling system. I never compromise on the block. The tubing, pump and reservoir are all tweakable based on your goals.

the swiftech block with pump on it always worked fine for me... but if you want 'the standard' of best reliable kit then get the D5 / MCP655 pump and dtek fuzion v2 CPU block, Danger Den's MC-TDX block is good too.

Agreed about standards with regards to block/pump choice.

Another thing you need to be aware of is that the Apogee uses fixed 3/8" barbs which limits your hose size without adapters. The pump on the Apogee is a MCP350 married to a Swiftech Apogee GT waterblock. Good for stock cooling and small form factor boxes, but I'd recommend going with a separate block/pump for your future setup.

not opposed to the 3/8" hoses... I kind of think it looks cleaner, but in a case as big as the pc-v1000 it may look weak. I'm starting to lean now towards the dd kit, anyone know of any reviews? Thanks for the help, I'm really looking forward to this!
