old 2.5" sata drive performance

I've been using an old Seagate Momentus 5400.3 sata I 80gb drive in my mini system for a little while now and when I went to offload some data, I noticed it seems slow.
When I copy data off of it to another drive on the network over gigabit ethernet I get 20MB/sec. Tried this with the built in windows program and teracopy. Running win7 64bit, 8GB ram and 3570k on both systems.
I know it's not the network(If I copy from one network source to another I get close to 100% network useage,) and the board supports sata III. AHCI is enable, and all drivers have been updated, and I tried both the sata II and sata III ports.
HDTune benchmark shows speeds between 18 and 45MB (avg 40) and when I turn off short stroke I get between 13 and 45 (avg 33). What else can I look at? Is it my imagination? Seems like the 80gb drive wouldn't take much of a performance hit in a usb enclosure, since I usually get mid 20s with one of those...

Well, I get that it's old and slow, but what makes you say it's nearing the end of it's life?
It's never had any issues. It has low hours and it has no smart warnings and 0 bad sectors.

What I'm trying to figure out is why it seems slower than I expected.
I would have assumed it would get more like 50 or 60 for an average, and not top out at 45MB/s am I wrong?
 
Speed sounds about right.
Its very low data density on a slow spinning platter.

If you were to empty the drive and copy data onto it, that data would be placed on the fastest part of the platter (the outer edges that pass more data/s over the head).
This is more likely to net you the theoretical max.

If you are getting 20MB/s, either there is a lot of latency and/or the data you are copying is nearer a slower part of the platter, near the spindle.
Extra latency is caused by fragmentation, busy CPU, small file sizes causing the seek head to re-align regularly, lack of memory, other uses of the drive ...
 
hmm files in question are generally over 300MB in size. CPU is idle. 0% fragmentation.
I guess I'll format it and try it out in another machine when my new drive gets here just to test the speed.
If it stays so slow, I'll just throw it in an old usb 2.0 enclosure and give it to my sister.
Probably going to take the Agility3 out of my other machine and put it in here and then put the new drive in the main system.
New drive is an OCZ Deneva 2 240GB.

I wouldnt give my sister such a slow drive.
Being that old, its also a data risk.
Be sure to tell her not to use it for any data that she values unless it is backed up regularly.
 
oh I know, was just giving it to her as a carry-around drive so she doesn't have to unplug her 500GB eSATA drive.
I recently upgraded her whole computer to a quad core with 2x1.5TB internals and a BluRay burner.
Mostly thanks to the members on the forum here.
Pretty big step up from her old p4 that died.
 
Totally expected for drives of that type.

In fact in may be hard to imagine this, but its only in the last 10 years or so that ANY consumer drives could achieve more then 50MB/s. Even the original 36GB Raptor back in 2003 could only muster about 60MB/s on average. And that was smoking back then (and $300) :)
