My Ultra 500w started making clicking noises about a month in so I got this PCP&cooling. Now twoo weeks in its making the same noises! It's this annoying clicking noise that only happens when I scroll a web page. And it is DISTINCTLY coming from the PSU fan, or inside the PSU. I really hope it is something stupid... specs in sig.... :(

your case is haunted...(sorry dude i havent a clue are you sure its not the mobo)

IT is DEFINETLY coming from the part of the PSU that the power plug connects into... I am sure of it :-(. I don't think that is good news... Why is it that these more "quality" PSU are having problems when my 350W Codegen no problem? (Of course without the GT, overclocks).

No I am not, but why would it be this computer specifically? I have 3 other computers running in this house with no problem, and there has never been a problem like this before.

But have you had three different computers running on THIS CIRCUIT?

What if the PC is plugged into one of the outlets elsewhere in the house?

Also... Were you using the same AC cord for both power supplies? Could be a short in the cord causing arcing noises (click click click.)

No I used a different cord, but will try a third. Another computer is running on the same circuit as this one.

The thing that bothers me is that it only happens when I scroll webpages. I can turn that wheel all I want outside of a web page. But load up IE and scoll and it clicks away... In fact it doesn't click in Mozilla... but does in IE?

WHOA!!!! You didn't mention that!!!!

I've seen that problem A LOT. That's usually THE MOTHERBOARD. NOT the power supply.

YIKES! Well... I guess it's a good time to go A64 then :p Do you have AIM or anything so I can talk to you in real time? Still cohfused as to why it is coming from the PSU  And went away with the upgrade to the 510SLI for a couple of weeks...

Nothing personal, but no. ;)

The problem somewhat coincides with the power supply because it is a power problem, but it's a power problem caused by the motherboard. I can't explain it exactly, but I've had the issue many times before over the years, and every time it's been the motherboard, and every time, replacing the power supply may CHANGE the problem, but over time it never goes away. It has something to do with a short between a signal from the board and the 5V line. Like I said, I'm not going to pretend to know the details, but replacing the board will likely take care of the problem.

So even though it is only in one program it is the mobo? I'm gonna try the PSU in another system of mine and if it works fine... Venice here I come! Or maybe Newark ;)

Try this.... Clock the CPU back down. What happens?

The clicking noise has been described like a cricket chirping. What might be the problem is one of the toroidal (sp?) coils on the motherboard. First, check to see if there is a ferrite ring wrapped with some wire around it (could be more than one). Then test if it is hot. I'll let you figure out a way to do this. Then see if you can get someone to hold it while trying to scroll the webpage and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then get creative with some sort of glue and put as little as necessary to stop the noise. If this is too much trouble, just live with it or get a new motherboard. It's a common problem with the asus motherboards. Their quality while still one of the highest in the industry, lately has gone down ever since they started manufacturing motherboards in China.

Touched both coils. One was completely cool. The other was lukewarm (under the XP90). Neither shook or move when I scrolled. And yes the noise is almost exactly like a circket chirping. What still boggles me is that the noise is coming from the PSU?

mine did that also old ass emachine had 2 different power supplies in it both of em did it but i dont think mine was power supply. only did it in ie and only while using the mouse wheel did it for about 6 months all the while the board got more and more randow white error boxes forcing a hard reboot then one day it died completely.

OK, if you say so. I'm gonna explore my RMA options with Asus, see if my board is still under warranty. I've had it since summer '03 so I doubt it but we'll see...

Response from PCP&C

At very low load this can be a characteristic of the fan. However, we do
have a mod that will correct this if you do run extended periods at very low
system load. To have this mod done contact us toll free at 800-722-6555 and
ask for the RMA dept...

My Soltek 75FRN-L mobo started doing that... the board would make a quick "cheep" sort of sound whenever the CPU load was changing, and scrolling a mouse in IE does just that.

Further investigation revealed bad capacitors on the motherboard. I've got a new motherboard now, and everything's nice'n'quiet.

this happened only once. and i have a NF2 mobo. when i use my logitech mouse scroll button while i was lookin at websites. i noticed it only happening once tho and i was using IE.

So even though my PSU is making the sound it is my board? Not trying to be difficult just am confused. Anybody care to explain?
