Oh crap. Not again....

Ok.. im totally stumped.. Heres my specs

AMD Barton 2500+
DFI Lanparty Rev a
40 gig maxtor
enlight 420 psu
512 pc2700 ram in dual channel (2x256)
ATI Radeon 9800

(Nothing is overclocked)


Heres my problem.. Ive formated about 7 times total now.. Each time, I go and I install drivers, and sp1 or sp2... And about 15 minutes into finishing all of that, my computer just starts to freeze.. explorer.exe just crashes.. When its right about to freeze I get major video lag, like my mouse will start to get choppy (very odd)..So I took the heatsink off the video card and check it, seemed to be fine, its getting contact with the video chip itself..
I have tried installing xp on my 160 maxtor drive and it does the same thing. Also, my mouse sometimes just quits.. Its usb, the light is still on.. but it doesent move at all.. I tried my ram by taking one out and it still does the same thing, all the ram channels do the same thing.. my computer just freezes..

I have checked the event viewer and nothing seems to be out of order. Also, when my computer freezes, my onboard speaker goes on, its a constant beep too..

I have no idea what could be the problem. Ive spent about 2 weeks on this problem and now im just fed up with it..

Do you guys have ANY ideas on what could be happening?


Also, while my box was in Eugene, my friend flashed the bios, but once you flash the bios and the system boots to windows.. doesent that mean that the bios is working properly?? or am I wrong and could the bios be working part time?

Ok you have the memory installed as dual channel - remove the second channel stick - see what happens then. XP does not know what to do with the second channel until after the motherboard drivers are installed... do not reinstall the second channel memory until AFTER the motherboard drivers are up & running.
Try that and see what happens. (While you are at it make sure all connections/cables are properly seated.)
switch to a ps2 mouse during install as the usb drivers for the nforce 2 chipset can be iffy.(and support for usb while installing can be non-existent) make sure you have installed them before using the usb mouse... (go to dfi's website and make sure you have the newest usb driver.)

psu could be overheating, what happens if you directly reopen your comp after freeze?, btw bios controls aobut everything, so it could be that too, hmm I'm not sure, there must be some trigger to it

Uh oh....there's the problem. I grew up there and know of what you speak..... If you had your machine worked on by some of the guys I know that still live there......trouble....

Time for the basics; will the machine pass an overnight run of Memtest86+ with no errors? Will the hard drive pass the manufacturer's diagnostics? Both these tests run from a floppy; no OS required.

Start there.....and, good luck.

i agree w/ BBS, but id also recommend clearing the BIOS by resetting the CMOS. the mobo manual should say how and where.

Could also be your CPU overheating and locking up the system...

What happens if you reinstall windows and don't install anything and just let the system run for a while?

Also, does this problem happen after you install a certain driver?

If your RAM and hard drive test out ok you might be able to narrow it down to a driver issue... perhaps USB driver related?

Also, try using the newest VIA Hyperion 4-in-1 driver and not the one from the CD. Same with the other drivers... try downloading newer versions from the manufacturers websites.
