*** Official Catalyst 4.8 Thread ***

Installing now. Hopefully this will be better on my 9000 Pro then last time. New goodies to download too.

Are the 4.9 betas better than the official 4.8s? ie: do the 4.8 finals include the changes for doom 3 etc that were in the 4.9b's in them?

OpenGL driver efficiency is also improved. Older OpenGL games such as Quake III Arena and Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory show small improvement (1-2%) at low resolutions. Call of Duty framerates are up approximately 4%. Doom3 improves considerably more (as much as 12% on some product configurations) as a result of the same software efficiency improvements.
that is what the release notes say, i don't know if they are the same as the 4.9b. my d3 performance went up, but that is from 4.7

hmmm get these or stick with the Omegas...life is full of decisions

Runs faster but with issues. I get kicked out of the game with a VPU reset message.

109 fps @ 1600x1200 High Quality Everything on/8x AI with Cats 4.8

update: reinstalled 4.8. Seems to work fine.

No issues here so far, all my games; MOHAA Spearhead, Far Cry, UT2k4, NFS underground all run faster than before.

OGL seems a tad slower in the 4.8's vs the 4.9b's

All and all I'm pleased.

So, is it better to leave the VPU recovery feature on or off with these new 4.8 drivers?

I recieved a very small FPS boost in Doom3. I didn't do any other games as they already run smooth and didn't really need a boost.

Doom3 BM w/ rig in sig (9800pro is running stock speeds now)
4.7 Catalyst - High - 1024 - AF 2x - AA 0x - Advanced options all on
1) 28.4
2) 32.1
3) 32.2

4.8 Catalyst - Same settings as above
1) 28.4
2) 32.4
3) 32.4

~0.8% speed increase :p

EDIT - 4.8 Catalyst w/ ATIOGLXX.DLL replaced with 4.9 beta ATIOGLXX.DLL
1) 29.6
2) 32.4
3) 32.4

Same...

my 3dmark2001se went up a good 400 points
my aquamark3 went up 1,000 and change
my 3dmark03 went up by about 20 points

i added more ram(512) since the last time i did a benchmark so that might be why they went up?

I crash to desktop randomly (usually after 20-25mins) of doom3 with the new drivers ;(. I played doom3 for a few hours straight yesterday with no problem. And they only gave me a .9% fps increase in doom3. I think I'm gonna re-install the 4.7's.

same here minus the ram. i get more "pauses" in doom3 now though, but gained 8fps. hrmm.

If you installed these drivers over the 4.7's without uninstalling them 1st then this is more likely the culprit. Only cause this is what I did the 1st time and I got constantly kicked out of Doom3.

Uninstalled 4.7 then installed 4.8 and it's been playing fine ever since.

Hope this helps. Rob

Nope, I uninstalled 4.7's first. However I've tried reinstalling 4.7's and 4.8's and both have the old style seperate onepgl /d3d tab? And don't say what driver version. Which has me very confused. So I deleted all my catalyst installers (they might be corrupt?) and re downloaded the 4.8's. I am in the process of uninstalling / reinstalling the 4.8s I will update when I figure out if it worked.

Edit: I found out that the ati uninstall utility wasn't deliting the C:/ATI folder, I deleted it manually and installed the 4.8 cats. I ran the doom3 timedemo and got a healthy 5fps boost  I then played for like a 1/2 hour w/out problem or crash to desktop. The drivers get a thumbs up imo.

make sure you uninstall in control panel, restart use driver cleaner, restart, wait for windows to detect hardware, install Cat 4.8s, restart and there you go

Seem good. I didn't like the 4.8 betas. These seem a tad better. I get a wee bit of stuttering in OpenGL games like Soldier Of Fortune 2, but it goes away after a minute or so.

3DMark2001 up 600 points.
3DMark2003 up 100 points.
Aquamark up 1,250 points.

Visual quality is great and stability is solid. I run with VPU off and experience zero issues.

wow 4.8s are good...like a 2000 pt increase in aquamark...but i cant really say it was all the 4.8s

in doom 3 the catalyst 4.9 beta still seems to do better but only by like one frame

F@H used to crash farcry to teh desktop in 4.9b but these don't doo that. I see no preformance difference.

These new Cats have my system completely screwed up. I don't know if it's the the new drivers or the way they installed, but after I installed them they "took out" all my capture devices, and I can't reinstall them. They also made my system so unstable that I reinstalled the old Cat 4.7s and they seem to work alright.I still cannot get any of my capture devices to work evan after using Driver Cleaner, ATI uninstall, and the standard Windows removal program.Something the the drivers left behind is preventing me from reinstalling my capture devices, Winfast Tv 2000xp deluxe, & my shitty little webcam, GeH90433(or something like that)

Dunno about what kinda issues others are havin..but these are the only cat drivers i have got a decent boost in..both OGL and D3D n no issues to boot.

believe it or not.. my previous 'best' drivers were Cat 3.7 based hacked drivers...yup dat old

3dm2k1: 11374 --> 11972
Q3:206 --> 208.2

D3 seems da same ...dunno bout in game perf.

I always have that problem with any cat installs I've done. Usually I just reinstall the drivers for the devices and they work. I only have an ASUS TV tuner, but it stops working every time I install a new set of cats...

I have consolidated all my records with 4.8 cats..

2001
2003
Aquamark

Before was 3 diff driver sets...

Kudos ATI!

If you use Windows XP's remote desktop feature, and have the 4.8 Catalysts installed with the new control panel app, it will start to use 100% CPU when you remote into the machine. It's also using over 90 megabytes of memory, for apparently no reason.

Anyone else experienced this? I'm throwing away the control panel. It's pretty stupid anyways.
