Odd Sounds After Shutdown

Getting a weird "elecronicy" sound after shutting the computer down when it's been on for 12+ hours. To best describe the sound, I'd have to say it sounds somewhat like what the old 56k modems did when connecting to the internet, only not so much. This started happening recently (past week or so) on my new build (not even a month old yet). Do any of you guys have any ideas on what this could be? Would appreciated the help as I'm becoming a bit panicky.

Rig Stats For Added Insight:

MOBO - ASUS P6X58D Premium
CPU - Intel Core i7-920 @ 4.2 w/HT
SDD - Intel X25-M 80GB
HDD - Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB
Heatsink - Noctua NH-D14
Power Supply - CORSAIR 850W
RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB DDR3 1600 (x3 (total 12GB))
GPU - Sapphire HD 5970 OC
Soundcard - Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion
OS - Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

A couple of good candidates are a fan spinning down (maybe the one on the 5970, or the PSU), or the WD Black parking the head, possibly going bad but not necessarily (no 1st hand experience with these products).

If it's just a fan slowing down I take it it's not really an issue and I should just ignore it? As for the HDD going bad so soon, is that even possible? Also, does what you suggested mean I'm going to have to return or replace it?

If it's a fan slowing down, you might want to check for dust.

It is possible that an HDD could go bad that soon. It just happens. Luck of the draw, every once in a while an HD will see a quick death. Make sure you always have a fan blowing directly over your HDs.

Doing a warranty replacement with WD should be pretty quick and painless, they have a good reputation. I love all four of my WD drives.

Ah, well that's a relief. Recently a huge amount of dust has built up on the front filters (antec 1200), so I hope if I clean those off it'll go away. If not, it's good to hear WD provides reputible support for their customers. Though I will admit that I honestly hope it's not the HDD...

i doubt its the drives and in a case you would not hear the heads on the drive parking.. no if the side panels off then its a possible to hear it.. but id say its most likely the psu fan.. my thermaltake TP fan continues to run for another 20-30 seconds after my system shuts off so this might be what your hearing with your psu if it does the same thing..

got a vidcam? if so, record and post it on youtube or something, hehe.

I'd say anything similar to a modem sound would come from a power supply (when caps unload and transformers lose power). However I'd doubt you'd hear that over a couple fans.

On other thought:
Make sure your sound system or speakers are plugged all the way into the audio jacks. reseat audio card. reinstall drivers in worst case scenario.
Make sure your system is properly grounded (no bare metal directly touching any important electric components (caps, transistors, relay leads, transformers)

Good luck.
