I recently installed a new hard drive, a western digital 40 gig drive.
Since then, my computer had started freezing alot if i moved the mouse much, or if a .gif was on screen. If I had a filesharing or other program that was a resource hog, my computer would nearly freeze. I cannot even play music when these programs are open because the sound will freeze, and make odd beeps and weird distortion.
If I attempt to play any 3D games, such as half-life2, it will freeze and slow down for the first few minutes, and then start playing ok, only freezing a few times a minute. If I minimize the game and reopen it, it takes quite a bit of time to come back up and have it even moving.
I have tried taking out the new drive and running just the old one, it worked fine.
I have tried taking out the old drive, and again, it ran just fine.
It only does this when both drives are installed.
I've also tried defragging, disk checking, and formatting both drives.
Both drives are set to DMA, and cable select.
My system
a 350watt power supply,
(1)Maxtor 40 gig hard drive,old
(1)Western-Digital 40 gig hard drive,new
9600xt radeon video card,
audigy sound blaster sound card,
Asustek P4S8X-X motherboard,
512 meg RAM,
Pentium 4 2.4 ghz processor.
Thank you for any help, whether it corrects the problem or not.
