Alright, so, here's how it is. I purchased a WD2500 HD (the 250gb version, could possibly be called the WD250 I just can't remember) the other day and have it mounted vertically... (IDE connections facing UP) in my case. The thing is totally silent normally, but when it spins down, the thing makes a wierd, high pitched loud whine... kinda like what you'd expect to hear by stopping a fan with a zip tie... then a click as the HD reading arm drops back to it's resting place. Is this a bad sound? Should my drive be mounted with the IDE connection facing up?
My SMART status reveals the drive is working fine, loading at 38C... but I'm on a mac and can't find a good free utility to monitor ALL of the SMART statistics (I'm just going by what my OS is tellin me).
Thanks alot
