Odd CDRW noise

My liteon 52x cdrw makes a sort of grinding or scraping noise. It happens right after the cd has spun up and starts to spin down. Its not very loud and it still appears to read and burn just fine but its somewhat annoying.

I can always RMA it if nothing else.

I wouldn't worry about it.. it's probably just the drive trying to read off the cd.

i dunno if CD drives do this, but it could be the laser "unparking" and then "parking" similar to the read head of a hard drive when it first turns on.

If this noise is something like sweeping a piece of sandpaper over wood, starting "loud" and then lowering as the drive spins up/down, I would consider it "normal".

Some drives have some kind of "coupling" device between the motor and the CD designed to smooth acceleration/deacceleration, and some of those devices make just this kind of noise.

My ancient 10x CD-ROM drive just does that and it has been working fine for more than 6 years as of now...
