I've run into a pickle. I need to flash my BIOS and this PSU only comes with 1 floppy power connector. I have to use this connector to power the board so I don't have one for the actual floppy drive. Is there an adapter I can get to convert the molex connector to be a floppy connector?

Are you sure you HAVE TO use that connector on the mobo?

I thought that connector was only provided for ADDITIONAL power. I don't think it's actually REQUIRED. Try posting the PC without having it hooked up.

bump for info to others

What motherboard's require it?

I just looked in a DFI manual and found that the floppy power connector isn't required. It says it's recommended if "you are using two graphics cards."

I don't know of any other boards with these connectors, but I'm curious to find out if they're out there.

Yeah DFI :p

My brand new MSI Neo4 requires it. How do I know? Because it wont fire up if I pull it out.

Edit: are we talking about the same thing?

Which Neo4? I have built a bunch around the Neo4-F.

The OP is talking about floppy connectors, but jonnyGURU seemed to talking about the 4pin square plug used for the CPU.

Christ. Do you think I'm STUPID?!? :p

I never mentioned the 2x2 4-pin 12V connector. Did I? We've been talking about the floppy power connector all along. :p

Hmmm.......

The DFI board doesn't "require" it, but it's strongly recommended for stability, expecially when OCing. If you run it at stock speed, which is a good idea for a BIOS flash anyway, you SHOULD be fine if you unplug that connector and use it for the floppy drive. Now honestly, if you want to be paranoid about it, which is a fine thing, because I'd kick myself if for some weird reason the system hiccuped during the flash, I'd go to ye olde computer shoppe and spend the couple books for an y-cable with a floppy connector on it, plug it in, and have the floppy and mobo plugged in at the same time, it's only going to put you out a few bucks and you'll feel safer. And then you can remove it if you don't want some non-UV reactive cabling in the case. :) Orrrr....look at a USB floppy drive. Orrr...I believe some people use CD images and USB flash boots for BIOS flashing too, I haven't looked into it.

Yet the manual says it doesn't. Hmm....

The folks at the forums also say they don't support modular power supplies, adapters, power supplies under 1KW, etc.

The more I read the DFI forums, the less I like DFI. It's not that having a solid power supply with stable rails and plenty of power isn't GOOD advice. And certainly making sure the board has plenty of juice whenever and wherever possible. But when it gets processed in my head, it gets spit out as "we don't want to support you because we're tired of suggesting the same things over and over again."

And to think... I actually used a few of their boards 8 years ago.

I admit there's something wrong with DFI in that regards. Either fess up that your manuals are crap and come out with a new revision of them or continue having contridictory answers whereever you look and then have people do reviews and bitch about the documentation.

As it says on page 61 of the manual, "If you are using two graphics cards, we
recommend that you plug power cables from your power supply
unit into the two 5V/12V power connectors. This will provide more
stability to the entire system. The system board will still work even if
the additional power connectors are not connected." *shrug* On the other hand, since I'm OCing, I've got them plugged in anyway. :) Having that one cable plugged into the middle of the mobo sure looks stupid though.

As fast as things change at DFI, it would be impossible to have a fully up-to-date manual for an N4 mobo!

You don't really think people should let them slide on poor documentation because things change do you?

I really don't know what to think.
It seems that all DFI N4 customers are really advanced Beta testers & the product is evolving daily.

My dad used to have a Sony Beta. Great picture quality.
