OC'ing the 6800?

I've been seeing good prices on the 6800's (non Ultra / non GT) and am coming from an 9700AIW. What I am curious about is the OC potential of the 6800. I loved that my old 4200 easily achieved 4600 specs and am wondering if there could be a similar benefit here?

I understand that there is a difference of 12 and 16 pipelines, but can the core/mem move up to GT specs?

would this make a difference minus the 4 pipelines?

thanks in advance.

ps. anyone want an AIW ? :D

I am thinking about buying a new video card too. I thought about the 9800Pro but then I saw the 6800 for 250!

I am also wondering about this...

The pipeline difference will be evident, even if overclocked heavily. Dont get me wrong, the 6800 is a fast card for a great price. Faster than a 9800xt, for less money... go for it.

-6800 has 2.2ns ram @ 700
-GT has 2.0ns ram @ 1000
-Ultra has 1.6ns ram @ 1100

you do the math...

good point. i think ill wait till anand does some comparative oc'ing.

as far as thw AIW for sale..i'll be waiting till i have another card in the mail so keep an eye out on the FS forum

A little more? Its a $200 difference, and for most people thats just not affordable. As long as you dont get ridicuolous with your overclocking, youll be fine ;)

The 6800 is a great performer for less then $300 but it wont be able to perform anywhere near as well as the GT. Its only 12 pipelines, uses slower speed RAM, and only has 128MB of RAM.

The 6800 is faster then the 9800XT and 5950u so if your looking for a card in that price range its the one to get.

If your wanting higher performance though i would get the 6800GT. I havn't heard of more then maybe 1 or 2 people that couldn't break ultra speeds with one. Mine auto detects in CoolBits PAST ultra speeds.

The 6800u isn't worth the price unless you have it to blow.

true, the 6800u does OC but from what i've seen, they don't have nearly as large of an overhead that the GTs do. I can't wait to get mine and see how far I can push it. I just wish there was a better air cooling solution for these cards. The 6800u's get a nice dual slot soultion, whereas the GT's are limited to a single slot. Maybe Arctic Cooling will come out with a VGA Silencer 2 or something for 6800s :D :D (or maybe i'm dreaming).

I somewhat agree, but remember that the Ultra can OC too ;)

Thats true, but most people are going to be CPU limited on just a GT unless you run 1600x1200 and AA + AF in the games you play. And even then you need a decent CPU.

Yes the GT rocks but I will be steppig up to the Ultra when its avaialbe for the dual dvi so I can go back to dual LCD with out freaking our over the difference in picture quality
