Oc'ing cpu for first time, need advice.

I've oc'd Intel's before like nothing, but AMD is a whole nother story. I have a AMD64 3200+ 939 Winchester. It's about 4 months old, idles @ 28-32C (depending on room temp) I dont want to do anything drastic like volt modding, I just want a nice oc via upping the FSB in Bios. The FSB is @ 200MHZ right now, I'm hoping I can do at least 230mhz. (3500+ equivalent) I have a stock heatsink/fan and while I know others are better, idling at 30c on average seems good to me without needing a new fan.. :)


My questions are....
Can I even get as high as 230mhz/Are Winchesters good overclockers?
As long as I stay within the temp limits, will my cpu still last me another year or so? (I've heard ocing amd64's really kills their life cycle, but I havent gotten solid word of this)

Hate to sound like a n00b, I know the gist of things, I've just never tampered with AMD before, especially amd64, used to always be an intel guy.

Hypothetically speaking, lets say I can do 230 for the FSB within range of temps. I also have a 6800GT with a zalman cooler, I'm hoping to do 415/1100 with it.

My biggest question is, with both of these overclocked (cpu 230mhz fsb/gpu 415/1100) what kind of performance advantages can I expect? With both being oc'd to where I plan to go with them, will it squeeze out about 10 more fps? 5?

I had a 2.66ghz intel I oc'd to 2.9 (had crappy memory) and at the time also had a 5900nu, which oc'd about as much as I plan to oc the 6800gt, with the combo, I gained about 7fps in games. I was just hoping to get similar results now. (Trying to ready my system for some decent Quake 4 gaming without having to get a 7800gtx or new cpu just yet)

I'm not sure what performance advantages you will have OCing your 6800GT I have my 6600GT OCed and I've notice a few more fame rates and things look a bit smoother but that it....As far as the CPU goes, yes you can OC it to 2.3GHz....I have the same CPU and mine is @ 2.5GHz.....It also depends on your ram, you may or may not have to run a ram/cpu divider...I had to, to get it to 2.5GHz, but when I had mine @2.3GHz I didn't have to run a divider so my ram ran @ 230MHz alongside the CPU......Any other questions?
 
With the temperatures that you are looking at you should not have any problems with a solid overclock. You will definatly see performance increases in gaming and applications. As for as the life cycle of the processor, I've never heard that it to die out any faster than an Intel would.
 
Thanks for the info guys. I forgot to mention i'm using an nforce4 gigabyte mobo. I guess I'll get started on oc'ing, I'll let you know how things go. :D
 
as for the temperature thing...the "rule" is for ever 10 degrees the CPU goes up, 1/2 the time it lasts...so just make sure ur temps dont go from 30 degrees to like 50 degrees lol
