I have been overclocking for about 6 months now and I have not been able to grasp what exactly makes a limit to OCing. Is heat the only real factor? and if so does that mean if you can somehow get the heat to stay down enough and enough voltage does that mean you can overclock it infinetly? I'm thinking about water cooling, right now I have my 2700+ to 2.209 and fsb and ram to 400mhz. If I water cool is there any guarantee I will be able to push it higher? Thanks in adv.
 
Heat is only one factor that determines the maximum overclock. Other factors include the chip itself and how it holds up under strain, the motherboard, the memory, the power supply, and some other smaller factors.

So what I'm really saying to you is, NO, if you get the best cooling out there you will NOT be able to overclock forever. The internals of the chips simply can not function at certain bus speeds etc.. etc... For example, when was the last time you saw a 486DX 50mhz processor clocked at 500Mhz? At 100mhz? You don't because chips arent made to work within specs and pushing them over that will simply cause them to fail.

Watercooling does help you overclock more, but moreso to the limits the chip inherently has. Even people with vapochills, peltiers, and other 'advanced' cooling methods really only give you a little more (realistically) than air cooling, but it does help a little bit.

Yeah, thanks alot. You helped me out alot. I'm trying to figure if its worth my while to look at watercooling. How would you determine how far you could push a 2700+? Is there any certain limit? Does anyone have a 2700+ w/ watercooling, how far have you pushed it? Thanks
 
Unfortunatly, with overclocking there really is no way to say how far you get. It all really depends on too many factors, and how far you are really willing to push the chip. Most people go into watercooling for its relative silence, and good performance (depending quite a bit on how you set up the watercooling). Some people will say "I've got that chip and I've got it up to XXXX mhz at X.XX volts at XX degrees C!!!@!" I say F*ck off! What works for you doesn't work for everybody, and there are really too many factors to take into account when overclocking. The only way to see what the max overclock is for your system is to do it yourself and take your time. Push it as much as you are willing, and your chip is willing, and then you have your maximum overclock.

Yeah, I think you are very right. I am looking at the Koolance Exos and the Corsair Xtreme Water Cooling System. I have heard all good things about the corsair xwcs except the grommets on the pci board as reviewed by SystemCooling.com. I wan't to hear more negatives about it if there are any more. Hopefully not. Now I know you get more pride out of doing-it-yourself but I don't trust myself to put together something that will even hold water and keep it from frying my mobo or something to that effect.
 
A DIY kit is not only easy to put together, but it will cool A HELL of a lot better than the Koolance or the Corsair if you do it right. Check out kits at Dangerden (www.dangerden.com) and Dtek (www.dtekcustoms.com) before you decide to settle on a Koolance. Even the basic kits from dangerden will cool better than the koolance and it will cost less.
 
Well its like- "What if it leaks on my $200 video card and blows it, or my mobo" Thats all I can think about when I think of diy. In this case...
 
Those are risks you have to take with a premade kit too, not just a DIY kit. A premade kit is just a DIY with crappy small diameter tubing and crappy waterblocks, but they all connect in the same way, so leaks are just as likely. To aviod leaks on your components, you leak test all watercooling kits for 24hrs first to see if it leaks at all, then patch up any leaks (its rare to have them if you install the kit correctly) and continue leak testing. If you are careful, watercooling is actually very safe.

I'm gonna do it myself. I have looked all day for places to buy from. So far the only real decent place i've found is directron.com. Do you know of any?
