Hi,

I've been testing my Q6600 G0 to see how far I can push it with stock cooling by just upping the FSB and vCore.

I'm stuck at 3.4Ghz (9x380). The CPU voltage is 1.450 and the temp is idling at 54 according to Core Temp

Tried 3.6 (9x400) with 1.450 vCore but I got a blue screen during vista boot. Probably down to the RAM, it's auto atm lol.

I'm not sure if I have a bad chip, shall I RMA? I'm jumping the gun a bit but I've just got this feeling that 3.4 is going to be the max from this chip judging by the temps

My ambient temp at the time was 28C (82F)...

Specs:

  • Q6600 G0
  • P5K Deluxe
  • 2GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer 8500

Thanks

Will give it ago thx but the temps are kind of worrying especially as they are idle (even if it is on stock cooling)

Umm.. 3.4 is a pretty great overclock.. 3.6 should be about the maximum you can achieve on air cooling. Air cooling as in "good" air cooling, NOT a stock hsf.
Your idle temps are pretty high. I idle around the low 40s, and load at high 50s.

Have you ran prime95 (newest version supports 4 cores) to check stability?

I'm sure your cpu isn't defective. There's no reason to RMA it, you might even end up getting a B3...

I would suggest replacing the stock hsf with a better one. Along with Arctic Silver 5 or something similar. Should keep your temps in check.
There are a few that's recommended by people. One of them is Tuniq Tower, which is the one I'm using. It's huge, but it gets the job done.

Also, I recommend putting your spec on your sig. cpu, mobo, memory, psu and etc.
So people here can help you diagnose problems easier.

A 40% overclock on a quad qualifies a "bad chip" now, eh? Check your max FSB with a 6x multi first.
