obvious airflow problem?

I have an Antec mid-tower. I'm not even sure of the model, but it looks like your average case to me. I am running a non-OC'ed AMD 64 3700 with an XP-90 HSF at idle at 40c. I thought this was a little hot. I took off both side panels and the temp at idle dropped to 31-32c. Is that an indication of an airflow problem, or should I expect to get a significant temp drop with an open case? Thanks.

i would say yes some run theres with out sidepanels and sware by it but me i have 3 kids that like to touch everything on my desk so i have to keep the panels on what fans do you have and were and which way do you have the facing the best setup is as meny blowing in as blowing out and count the psu fan

I have 2 92s in the front pulling air in. 1 80 in the side pulling air in. 2 80s and the PSU pulling air out. Also, one thing I've never been really sure about, is which way do most people face the HSF? Mine is currently facing down, blowing air toward the CPU.

Here is the obvious question:
If you aren't overclocking, why care?

My point is at 40C your system is running fine. Sure 31-32 is cooler, but what are you gaining? Especially if your system stays on all the time, no difference really.

To answer your question, no it doesnt seem like an airflow "problem". It seems like your system is getting cooler air than when it is closed. What sensor is telling you the difference? CPU sensor or mainboard sensor? If CPU, sounds like maybe you COULD improve the flow, but not necessary. If it is your mainboard sensory, well it is more likely to show such fluctuations and you should likely ignore it.

If the system is working fine, why did this even come up? Just curious...

If you want to see the temperatures drop, you could always mod a duct from the intake fans to your video card/CPU/etc. The fresher the air going to your HSF, the better.

when i had air mine blew away from the cpu i would add a fan to the top blowing out and be happy with it

This is an issue because I'm definitely planning on OC'ing this chip. From what I understand, this san diego OCs like a muther :)

Have you thought about moding the case to replace the loud 80mm/92mm fans with some 120mm's?
Sounds like you have enough intakes, maybe get a more powerful Exhaust fan or two.

u do realize taht temperatures drops when ur case is open?

seems to me u have enough fans and such...

might want to make that side fan a exhaust to balance the flow
