From what I've seen, the gtx275 performs about the same as the hd4890. The gtx 285 is 100+ dollars more than those cards but is it really that much better?

No it is not.

It's a useless GPU and not worth spending any money on.

Is that the answer you were looking for?

Honestly though a GTX 285 is overpriced and gives nothing over a GTX 275 in terms of actual gameplay (especially now with the card that have dbl the memory).

If you want a lasting system the GTX285 may be worth it, but from what I saw when I had my single GTX260 it was pretty much all I really needed for gaming. I bought the second one mostly for folding, although having the option for SLI open to me is nice too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but nvidia cards are better for super high resolutions and ati is better at lower resolutions. But I seem to be stuck in the middle at 1920x1200. I figure I'll go nvidia because I'm familiar with their drivers, software, etc. Plus I hear their cards run somewhat cooler and quieter. The gtx275 seems to be the only cost efficient card right now for nvidia though.

Folding is a research thing right? I hear a lot of people doing this, but I can't imagine so many people dropping 200 dollars for charity.

you have got it opposite..

higher resolution or higher AA/AF, ATI have better scale....

why not when we are dropping the money anyway? but the GTX285 isn't going to be any better at folding (or not that much anyway). to me its a strong selling point for Nvidia, the only real use the cGPU has right this moment. and ATI cards as stated above higher resolutions if your using AA.
