I found a pretty cool document on the NV developer website that gives a little more info on SLi. Here's some of the stuff you may find interesting..........
The driver decides how to run the application and can work in 3 different modes with an SLi configuration.
1. Compatability mode - uses only 1 GPU but guaranteed to work.
2. SFR (Split-frame rendering) - the method we see described in most of NV's public SLi info.
3. AFR (Alternate frame rendering) - This is very interesting, AFR has been used by ATi in the past and here are NV using it (5 years later)!! SFR still has it's advantages though - clipping means the vertex load is greatly reduced for each GPU.
In fact, NV describe AFR as the 'preferred SLi mode' even though SFR dominates all the NV PR on SLi (man, I love acronyms!). It also says AFR is faster because it has less communications overhead then SFR. Go ATi!!
NV describe SLi speedup as up to 1.9x single GPU performance.
SLi doesn't double video memory.
It's important to disable VSync and triple buffering when using SLi to maximise it's benefit.
