Nvidia GTS 360m OUT!?!

mobile GPUs will always suck vs desktop models because even in desktop replacement size models they're limited to maybe a 50W TDP vs desktop GPUs with >200W of power.
 
Wow...this is really amazing of Nvidia...like, how come they can't be sued over this bullshit?

I actually saw this today while looking at laptops on Walmart.com (I know...) and the Toshiba Qosimo, which is their "gaming" series laptop with i7 CPU had the GTS 360m...intrigued by this new GPU I Googled it ofcourse! ITS SHIT! These used to come with GTS 250m's with DDR5...why would they switch? AND WHY THE FUCK IS THE 360m A 3XX SERIES GPU AND HAS NO DIRECTX 11?!?!?!

Like, I dont even own a laptop with a Nvidia GPU, so it seems like it really wouldn't matter to me but this just pisses me the Hell off!
 
Isn't this pretty much the same thing they did with the GeForce 310? 1 and 2.

They did it to us before so why not again? I guess some people fall for it or maybe PC makers use it and sell pre-built systems advertising the "first new" series for their computers. Shady? At times? Nvidia has been doing this for years now...its no longer just "shady" or a way to make a quick buck, its now fraudulent and a complete lie.

Yeah that's true, but he's saying the 360m is worse than the 260m (both mobile parts). He's not saying the 360m is worse than the desktop 260. Shady stuff man.

to be fair, it is the GTS 360m that is slower than the GTX 260m. Still, seeing a rebranded gt 240 listed as a 300 series product is pretty pathetic.
 
There will always be uninformed fanboys who shop by brand name. There are also people who simply bend over and accept it. Both of these type of people deserve to be ripped off. Making apologies for businesses who lie and cheat their customers is the definition of a shill.
They get away with it because they sell you a product considered a luxury. If they sold watered down or expired medicine as new and it cost people's lives they'd have been shut down long ago. Consider yourself lucky they are not in that kind of business.
 
The GTX 260m was a beast...had an Asus over the summer (used it for play while traveling for work) and the P8700 CPU and GTX 260m 1GB handled any game I threw at it...from NFS Shift to Far Cry 2...it truly is quite an impressive GPU considering its a mobile. Definitely faster than the 9600GT I used to own, seemed to handle games almost as well as my HD4850 in my HTPC!

I have to agree with this.

Even though its definitely shady fraudulent practices by Nvidia its still up to the consumer to research before they buy. If you get ripped off buying a laptop with a GPU thats not as fast as the "name" implies it is still totally your fault as the consumer.

this is the first time the equivalent-renamed part wasn't actually equivalent as of recent times, but the blatant "we don't even try anymore" attitude is nothing new.
 
I just bought an Asus G60 with the 360m 1Gig. GDDR5. Honestly I think it is a very respectable card considering nVidia places it below their high end GTX cards. Is it old technology? Sure. But at 1366x768 is plays Crysis Warhead just fine and at less than $900 I feel it was a good deal.

It's not that old. :p The GT 215 core was barely released 6 or so months ago (yes, it's a new chip and not just rebadged). Giving it a 300-series name is misleading, considering it's not a DX11 part.

This stuff is nothing new. It started with the GF4 MX (2002 "notta GF4 card") and Radeon 9000 & 9100 (2002 & 2003 "notta SM2.0 card") long ago.

I paid my Acer 5740G 6939 for 720 USD, and it play crysis too ;)

I wish you the best of luck but I had done some reading and found that Asus and Toshiba were among the least likely to have hardware problems. I had looked at Acer but had read some bad things about people having problems. I also really wanted the 7200 RPM drive.

I am used to my desktops viewsonic 28" at 1920x1280 and gaming on a laptop is just not as fun but when your away from home it's better than nothing.

300 series was never ment to support dx11.. its only suppose to have dx9/10/10.1 support.. which all gt2x0 and GTS2x0 and GTX2xx already could support if nvidia updated the hardware which is exactly what nvidia is doing with the GTS/X300 line of products..


i mean we all knew this was going to happen anyways.. and hell even the GTX260m isnt a GTX 260.. its a 9800GTX+ aka GTS 250.. go look at the numbers and then match them up to the desktop varient and you will see exactly what the GTX260m is and what the GTS 360m is..

Yeah, you're right. I don't know what I was thinking. The 300 series name seems fair for DX10.1 even though there are no higher end GPUs in the series.

I pointed the GTX 260m thing out in another thread recently (checking for outrage a la this thread for the fact that the "Mobility Radeon HD 5850" is actually a HD 5770). :p

Yeah, 50MHz slower core, 125MHz slower shaders and slightly faster memory (950MHz DDR3 vs 900MHz DDR3... 1900 vs 1800 effective).
 
The GTS 360m seems to just be an overclocked (and hence faster) GTS 260m. Nothing out of the ordinary there. Don't understand why people are comparing the GTX260m to the GTS360m.
 
^ That doesn't justify a new naming scheme. It could've been named the GTS 365M for example.

And even ATI has rebadged the Mobility 43xx to 5145 to 530v/540v and the 46xx to 5165 to 550v, both rebrand attempts done in the same year as well. Matter of time before Intel starts rebranding GMA I guess?

The GTS 360m is a mobile version of the desktop GT 240 (GT 215, the 40nm DX 10.1 96SP native part that supports GDDR5 and only has a [non cut down] 128-bit memory interface). It's nothing like GTS 260m (a G92 derived chip "N10E", DX10 only, 96SP of 128SP enabled, with a [cut down] 128 bit memory interface).

yeah both sides do it.. its been like that since day 1 of the mobile platform.. its just that this is so blatantly obvious that the the GTS360m it a complete sales ploy into tricking people to think that this is an upgrade over the GTX260m when its not..

i havent payed attention to ATI's naming in a long ass time since i only own 2 laptops with ATI cards.. an ATI 9600 mobility and an ATI HD4570.. but at least they are using off the wall naming and not trying to market a HD4300 mobility as an HD5770 mobility or some shit that its obviously not..

The GTS 260m is a DX10.1 GT215 based part. Check Nvidia's website.
 
GTS 260m - 96sp GDDR5 part based on GT215 chip.
GTX 260m - 128sp GDDR3 part based on G92b

ATI's 5145 and 5165 chips are misleading in name anyway, they've got nothing to do with Evergreen, just like 42xx integrated chips are rebadged 3200 chips with faster clocks, and nothing to do with R700. Just like the GTS 250 being a G92b card in a series of GT2xx chips.

low end part of Acer is absolutely terrible TBH, but mid-high isn't..

especially 5740G... its pretty good overall.
 
What does the name matter?

They could have called it the Super Dupper Hyper Fast Card. But like some have already said, you have to as a consumer read the specs, or better, some reliable reviews.

It's not NEW in any real sense of the word. The only thing that has changed is that it was shrunk to 40nm. The design is otherwise over 2 years old. GT 210/240 etc. are old tech shrunk down and rebadged to fool uninformed consumers into buying it.

Likewise this 360m is way worse than the GTX260m, but consumers will think - hey the series number is higher so this has to be better and newer, right? WRONG. To Nvidia's marketing department I'm sure this seems like a good idea - make a weaker, cheaper to produce card, and badge the lineup to give people the impression that it's newer, faster tech, Nvidia's profits increase.

The problem is that this practice is misleading and fraudulent. But as long as people buy into it, and nobody SUES THEM, I'm sure Nvidia doesn't care.
