nVidia driver stops XP starting :(

I have been having some problems running Richard Burns Rally http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=854219 so I decided to install FarCry and try it. When I tried to run it my computer flashed up a blue screen and restarted and then it couldn't load Windows XP anymore. I ran chkdsk /r and it said it recovered from some errors and then Windows XP worked again but I thought that maybe there was a video card driver problem so I uninstalled the drivers (66.93) for my XFX Geforce 6800 Ultra and restarted. Then I installed the drivers again and restarted but Windows XP would no longer start, it would get to the blue Welcome screen just before it shows the desktop and then it would restart. I got into safe mode, ran msconfig, and disabled "NVIDIA Display Driver Service" in Services. This let Windows XP start normally, except without the NVIDIA display drivers so everything looks yuck. As soon as I enable that service or try to reinstall the drivers XP refuses to start. What could be causing this?

I have only just reinstalled XP and all the drivers and software but now it is stuffed up again. This computer is really anoying me, I am just about ready to give up on it. Anyone have an idea on how to fix it? Preferably without reinstalling XP again.

use the forceware beta drivers or try omega.

also right click my computer, properties, advance tab, Startup and Recovery "settings" uncheck automatic restart to see the BSOD you are getting. let me know what the BSOD is. probably driver irq is less then or equal to
 
I had a similar problem using a dat tape drive and Novaback software. During a backup of my system, I get a weird message saying system files have changed and should be restored from the CD. I say no to this, the backup finishes, and when I reboot, I get a green screen of death.
Rebooted in safe mode, removed the Nvidia drivers, rebooted in normal mode, system came back, then re-installed Nvidia drivers, and everything is fine.
 
Have you tried stripping everything but the video, harddrive and cdrom, 1 stick of ram etc? This might be a ram problem, or a hardware conflict...

See if it boots on that, with the nvidia driver enabled. You have too much installed to pinpoint the error... unless you can tell us what the error exactly is (what it says on the blue screen).

It happens to me too. AFter manually turning off my computer and then turning it back on 1 or 2 times then it should boot up.
 
Sorry I took so long to reply, I went to bed. The blue screen info is at the end of this post. This computer was working ok before I reinstalled Windows XP and I have not changed any hardware since then so could it still be a hardware conflict? Also it seemed to work ok after I reinstalled XP and the nVIDIA drivers until I tried RBR and FarCry? If you think it could still be a hardware conflict I can try what you suggested.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers, that's when it stopped working, maybe I should try again?

EDIT: Thanks for the info about Microsoft support, I didn't know about that. I might give it a try.

Hmm I had a similar problem with getting bsod and nvidia drivers, nv4.dll was the file it was having a problem with, and I tried a bunch of different drivers, even omegas. I'd have to go to safemode and get rid of driver to get to windows, then i'd install drivers again and change resolution, then i got a bunch of artifacts and such. It was with an xfx 6800gt. I put my radeon 9700pro back in and everythign works great again. I just rma'd the 6800 hopefully a new card will fix prob.
 
mmm sounds similar, except I am fairly sure my card is ok as it has been working fine in this system before. Also I have never had artifacts.

I have managed to get back into Windows XP by removing my Geforce 6800 from the Device Manager and also uninstalling my VIA 4in1 AGP driver and also removing it from the Device Manager. Then when I got into Windows I installed th VIA 4in1 driver (version 4.53), restarted, installed the 66.93 nVIDIA drivers, and restarted and it gets into Windows ok now. All this was done with my soundcard removed too so maybe that helped a bit.

BUT I still can't run RBR :( . Well at least my computer starts.
