Nvidia -> ATI driver/install problem

A friend of mine is having quite the issue getting his new ATI card(s) to work on his puter. His comp is : a M981G from PC Chips 1 Gig and 2.8 Ghz Intel P4 Socket 478. The card he had in prior to upgrading was a Nvidia 5200fx. He uninstalled the nvidia drivers, shut down the computer and installed new ATI card. Now when he gets back into windows and trys to install the drivers it does not detect the video card so the driver installation stops. Dumbfounded by this he takes out theATI 850pro and does not know what to do. Some confusion ensues and he decided to do a destructive HD reformat. After the reformat he plugs the ATI card back in, hooks up his monitor and boom. Nothing at all comes up on screen anymore. His Onboard video works though.

Now what would cause this to happen and how does he fix it? He turned on the AGP slot and all that good stuff in BIOS, but the ATI cards still do not work at all. Any help would be appreciated.

I had a similar problem with going over to ATI a while back, but after the reformat it installed fine.

Thanks for the input, as this is a really annoying problem.

I think the reformat went a bit wrong (judging from your comment of a 'destructive' one), ask him to try another one and if it still doesn't work then I have no idea. But I have heard of people having to reformat going from nvidia to ati (even if using driver cleaner) so don't worry too much on the part :(

still having troubles...anyone else got any advice of what to do? We would call ATI but their office is closed due to a holiday.

Can you test the card in another computer to make sure it's still working? Or put the FX5200 back in to test if the AGP slot is working?
