Ok, I am wondering if for some reason I have a problem with the NTFS paritions on my computer. Every once and a while at login I am unable to login with my user, however if I login as the administrator and run chkdsk /f d: and chkdsk /f c: and reboot let chkdsk run and then reboot again I can login as my user again (for a while). Are there any utilites for NTFS partions that do the same functions as chkdsk but do it better (like Norton Disk Doctor did for FAT32) that have a trial version, or do not cost an arm and a leg to buy?

Check out the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) and see if it has what you need.

i will do that, just ran chkdsk /r c: and chkdsk /r d: just in case and other than taking a long time it didn't seem to help :(

Probably have some bad sectors. You can check the event logs for any disk errors.

I'd go ahead and backup anything and everything you can, if only for posterity.

actually, the problem was caused by one of my file servers going down. i unmapped the network drives on said file server for now and all is good. now i just need to fix the file server :(
