NTFS file encryption

Has anyone ever done NTFS file encryption for an entire drive? I've done it with folders before and it seemed kind of confusing. If you don't export the private key, can anyone still read the data, or only the user that created the encryption?

Does this slow down file read and write speeds? I'm sure it does at least slightly, but is it significant?

Anything else I should know before I consider this as an option?
