Now What?

I bought these before the price spike and before Seagate took over. They are for a hardware RAID array attached to a PERC5/i.

Are they still worth the price, or should I consider other brands? I know WD is off the table unless I go for the super-expensive REs... Trying to avoid that!

For ZFS you could get away with those. For hardware raid? I wouldn't use them.

hitachi 5400RPM..... stay away from samsung these days, they are rebadged seagates. :/

That's a pretty old hard drive model. Are you saying that even though "Samsung" has sold them as X that Seagate is replacing it's own drives using the same model number as Samsung?

seagate 7200rpm and WD Blue are OK for hardware raid

I have samsung F3/F4(before bought by seagate), 7200 RPM seagate, and WD Blue on hardware raid.

I had old green drive from WD that are OK, do not know with current green drive..

the issue is....... warranty is only 1-2 years for those..

I think, It does not matter with zfs or others, as long as our HDs are playing nice... we should be ok.

I have mdadm software raid 1 for OS( just move from HW adaptec 4805SAS raid to SW raid), works charms with 7200RPM WD.
WD green drive gave me slow response and sometimes kernel(kernel modules for SATA/AHCI) logs non-responsive errors on the physical drive raid 1 that causes random freeze-ing on the system.

my worst nightmare was 7200.11 ..

I thought WD Blue utterly disabled TLER (only enabled on REs and unable to fix with the WD firmware modder). Ideally I'd like to add another drive to the existing SpinPoint array, then create a second RAID5 because overly-large RAID5 is asking for trouble.

The 5/i doesn't do RAID6, unfortunately.
