Now it doesn't pass prime95?

Weird thing, the other day I drained my system to make way for an RMA'ed Pump. Since I was changing my pump, I decided to replace my stock 3/8" tubing (from the Kingwin AWC-1 aka Evercool WC-202 kit) with some Home Depot 3/8" tubing.

Since I've done that, I can't keep my 2.5ghz Overclock (it crashes in about 6 prime tests, rounding error), and even my 2.4ghz is finicky. It may pass prime for 24 hours before failing, or 14 hours, or 3 hours.

Any ideas what's happening guys?

You probably rocked the waterblock mounting a bit and naffed up the contact.

Remove the waterblock, clean it and the cpu properly and then re-apply whatever thermal compound you use and re-mount it.

Most thermal compounds will settle after a few months and will no longer be sticky and fresh like they first were. This means that if you move the waterblock around, the stuff won't fill all the micro gaps like it did the first time making for a much poorer contact.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'm going to reseat the heatsink, and also change my tubing to wider diameter. I realized that my old tubing's actually closer to 1/4" whereas the new tubing is exactly 3/16". Might be too restrictive.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Edited: 3/16" tubing, not 3/8"

Another thing though is my CPU temps (according to my Socket Diode) is only about 2-3 degreesk higher.

The thing is when i run 2.5ghz @ 1.8, the temps hit 62-63C and it runs stable. Right now my 2.4ghz @ 1.7 Temps are around 61C (which is about 2-3C higher than before the hose changing). So even if it is in diode temperature, it only went up 2-3C, would that cause instability?

I mean technically it should, but considering I was running the same temps and stable before at 2.5, I'm thinking somethings not right.

I'm still going to change my tubing back and reseat the heatsink, but it seems that shouldn't make that much of a difference.

3/8" tubing is bigger than 1/4" surely?

From my experience it actually makes little real world difference. You aren't gunna magically get another 100mhz out of a cpu from upping the tubing size unless you have a serious tubing problem.

Whoops, typo. I meant 3/16". It seems to me that it shouldn't be making that much of a difference either. My tubing should be good though (although there is this one tube that's just a tad short, so there's a nice little bend in it, not a kink, nor anywhere near a 90 degree bend, but it's pulled a bit, I should post a pic so u have an idea).

I'm not really looking for another 100mhz out of my CPU. I just want it to stay stable at the same rate it was before I changed the tubing.

I think though I might have missed something from before. What happend was I used to run two sticks of 256mb DDR (OCZ Premiere ram), and all my figures I'm giving right now for stability was based off of just running those two sticks. When I added my 512mb (OCZ Performance Ram) to make it 1gb (still dual channel), I did a quick memtest (just one pass), and didn't do any serious Prime 95 testing. I might be getting RAM problems there, where the 3 sticks of RAM don't want to play nice. I'm putting it th rough some serious Memtest86+ right now. Hopefully that's it (which means damn... I need to back off that FSB overclock).

Well after about 8 hours of Memtest, and 20 passes, it seems my RAM is good... so..... what's happening

Well unfortunately I'd say your cpu is borked.

I too have a XP mobile chip and I used to be able to run it at 2.6ghz dead stable. This was the case for several months to half a year and then it just decayed and became unstable. I tried everything to resolve it, but I know now that it's simply the cpu has just gotten worse.

So sorry, I think your cpu has 'aged' like mine through overclocking and all you can do now is to just run it at a lower speed.

Highly annoying, but that's how it goes.

You're not the only one who's had this, and increasingly as more time has passed, more and more peeps are coming out of the woodwork with this problem.

But then again, I could be wrong...;)

:( That makes me sad.... damn... well I'm going to keep priming away. It passed SuperPi in flying colours... so I'm hoping it was an anomaly... if not... well I guess it's a good excuse to go s939 :)

It's just Prime95. My bet would be it'll run games fine and do anything else you want without problems. I'm sure reseating the block will help, too, probably get you back to where you were.

If Prime95 is crashing, then there is a problem. Though I don't doubt most games will be fine due to them being less demanding. But it'll just make the crashing less frequent, that's all.

If you can't pass a good several hours of prime95, then you overclock just isn't 100% stable. Some people can live with a 99% ok system. Personally I can't.

Damn.. it ran for 24hours and 11 minutes, until it failed out. Rounding error. *sigh*....

HEY! Just had a thought. I noticed today that MY computer was actually no longer Prime95 stable either.

So, refusing to believe my cpu had degraded further, I did a bit of investigating and found that there was quite a large amount of dust built up on my radiator. A got out my vacuum cleaner and spent a while getting all the dust out of the rad. I also cleaned up all my fans I have running on my rad.

It made ALL the difference! Computer is stable again. Radiator is now cooler to the touch as well (sits outside my case).

So yeah, if you haven't tried it yet, try getting all the dust off your radiator and see if that helps. Clean the fans like I did as well. You might be surprised...

clean everything regularly, RAM, chips and mosfets on the mobo, etc.
a clean puter is cool puter is a happy puter

Disregard my last post, my comp seems to have failed prime95 again.

However, it seems to be coping with Burn K7.

You know, I'm starting to wonder whether the fault lies entirely in Prime95. No games are crashing on my PC, and Burn K7 is dead stable (and that gets the cpu literally 2-3°c hotter than prime95).

Maybe the latest version of prime95 is fubared? I notice that the latest version fixes one thing and that is a bugfix for the torture test. Maybe they didn't actually fix it and/or introduced another problem?

DaLurker, tell me, are you getting crashes with ANYTHING else?

Nope.... nothing.... Everything's stable. I just had another error. I knocked my overclock down. It's at 2.36 (instead of 2.42) @ 1.70 Volts.... and after 17 hours, I get a rounding error. I'm going to try it at 1.8 @ 1.575 stock just to make sure my chip isn't fubared. Wish me luck :( Btw, where can I get Burn K7?

I'm thinking maybe my waterblock isn't seatingright. I took the waterblock off last time, and the center of the core had like a little patch of AS sitting there. it's kind of weird actually.....
Good thing I have a Swiftech MCW6000 waiting for me to install in a week :)

Hmm.. failed again. Even at 1.8ghz (slower than stock). Oi... what does this mean?
