I thought I would link a thread that I created over in the Overclocking and Cooling Forum here, since there is a debate going on about whether the problem experienced is heat releated, or a power supply issue. Anyone here that could provide some insight? The system specs in question are in my signature, specifically the Antec Neopower 480.

When trying to overclock both the CPU and the Video Card, the system is completely unstable. One or the other is ok, just not both.

Please help shead some light on this, since you guys are the power supply experts!
 
when it comes to overclocking
which is unusually sensitive to voltage fluctuations as you press into the higher and higher overclocks there are the follwing points to consider

1st ESD & Electromigration Rant
you have to have both the luck of the draw, due diligence in ESD precautions, and a sufficiant thermal solution

2nd you need to supply power that is as stable as possible to the mobo's VRM (Voltage Reguilation Modual), and if your serious about it, you pony up the $$$ for a PCP&C turbo Cool (Transient Response\Output Regulation of 1%, DM PARD (Differential Mode Periodic and Random Deviation) otherwise known as AC Ripple at 10mV for the main rails, and plenty of juice on the +12V rail)

IMO one of the main reasons one mobo is able to OC better than another, often comes down to its VRM scheme,
overclocking is both an art, and a lottery

refer to the Watts dont meanJack sticky thread to try to figure out what reserves if any your PSU has

and post what PSU you have as well (is this the rig in your sig? or not?)

you should restate the question and gear it towards the forum your addressing with the information necessary for a thoughful response

one thing that comes to mind if we are talking about the Neopower, is that Ive been unable to locate any information regarding how AGP Cards might deal with power being supplied from two seperately regulated +12V rails (some of the power being first conditioned onboard and supplied via the AGP slot, and then a different +12V rail supplying the auxillary power to the card, have no idea if that is a potential issue or not

you would likely have enough amps with that supply, but it could be a factor, the specs are about as good as it gets outside the PCP&C, there is the standard DM PARD (120 > 50mV depending on the rail), but the regulation is +-3%

its could be the thermal solution

it could be the luck of the draw for the ICs

it could be memory timings
