could get one of these(I like the little blue zalman ones they work quite well) if you take something like MX4 paste and put a drop of crazy glue or use actual thermal glue you will get very good temperatures, it will be low profile like you want, and if you put a small fan on it, you will get great cooling as well.
The little blue zalman ones I used on my gpu ram chips and vreg and they worked exceptionally, I think although its not meant for a northbridge, the benefit would be their surface area, however this "flower" heatsink also has alot of material and an awfull lot of surface area so it might be quite hard to get better cooling while still being low profile, unless you make your own somehow? But at the same time the pictures of the ones I see dont seem like they catch all that much air really, so maybe little heatsinks would work better?

Oooh, thank you for the link and advice, I will look into it. I am planning on an Asus M5A88-M mobo in an htpc style case with low clearance for cpu cooling so what I put into it will most likely be in the low profile (sub 60mm) x 120x120mm-140x140mm range and I will not know if I need to do something like this until I actually get the board and measure.
Considering things like the Scythe Big Shuriken & Cooler Master Gemini II M4. Any other recommendations would be helpful as well.

noctua of course though $ they generally make among the best coolers to be had(I hate the color of thier fans though ) noctua NH-L12 is one choice, NH-L9i/L9a are 2 others. The mentioned CM gemini II M4, Evercool HPL-815EP, Reeven Arcziel cpu cooler, then there are other options as well for powerfull but still smaller Thermalright True Spirit 120M among them, then last but not least, there are many different AIO type liquid coolers from corsair(H50-55 and up)Antec, Zalman, Acetek and so on, they are pricier for sure, but do accomplish the space requirments and still have the performance needed.
if your looking at doing a differnet build, but still want the space, coolermaster with thier elite 120 advanced case or haf Xb, giving tons of room for just about anything you want to put into it, and you wouldn`t have to settle on "smaller" parts just to have the space to fit them.
