Right now im planing out a system I would like to buy around winter-spring 04-05, anyways right now im looking around for a northbridge cooler, quiet is good but not a neccesity, I have heard good things about this vantec vpu cooler and was wondering if that would do a good job at it? (point me to a better product if there is one) Also would that version be better or this version be better? Again if there is just better please show it to me, also I am thinking about getting a zalman 7000 cu so low profile would also be nice.

Links go nowhere.

Unfortunately for you everything may change by then, maybe not. BTX is coming, new chipsets are coming and arguably new mobo layouts will come. It may not be worth your effort to be planning this much in advance.

I'm looking for something for my northbridge too, because the fan on my IC7-G sounds like a dying goat now (its the newer design too, oh well).

To be honest, why are you looking at northbridge coolers? Most motherboards come with at least a decent passive heatsink and unless you plan to OC (like I do/have been) you don't need anything fancy anyway.

Yea I just got my NB1 on. Even though ambiant is down a bit because I dont have a case anymore the thing is room temp and not the blazing inferno it was with the stock heatsink (dfi infinity)

The 34db delta fan isint as bad as it seems like it would be either :)

I'd buy that but sadly it won't mount on my IC7-G because it uses the silly loop spring clip things.

Hmmmm thanks for the input, the northbridge show via new egg would you reccomend it from experiacne, reviews, or other? And modding a stock cpu cooler sounds like fun I might do that.

Damn this is a problem for me now. The SP-94 is big enough to make using many of the northbridge coolers a little difficult.

Nevermind, I think I'll try the thermalright NB-1 cooler. I have to see if it will fit on my IC7-G with my SP-94 though.

I went with the Vantec Iceberq for my NF7-S. Comes with some nice Al heatsinks, too (for your southbridge, etc.).

Well this is a waste of time. You dont even know if any of this hardware will work with a motherboard in that time frame. Plus there is a damn good chance it will of been replaced by then with something better. Just be patient.

Anyone know how much better temps that Thermalright NB-1 would achieve over an IS7s stock northbridge fan?

10F better? Maybe? The temps dont matter at all, what matters is if its stable. You could probabily get 10-15 more FSB mhz out of it

It's only game stable for a couple of hours (just found that one out), and under load the northbridge runs at about 60C, according to the Abit sensor. It would just give me some peace of mind to know that I won't have "rotissarie northbridge syndrome."

I just put the NB-1 in my system, clears my SP-94 on an IC7-G with no trouble at all. No louder than the stock NB cooler. The most agonizing part was clipping the damn fan on.

Well, it sounds like you will be buying a new motherboard anyways. Boards these days come with decent coolers, they have just not taken the time to do it properly, in which case there are a few things you can do.

Get the bottom lapped well
apply good thermal paste
and if you really want to, you can get a better fan

That seems to be all good enough for them. And then they acctually perform pretty decent. That's what I did on my current rig. I took the fan right off of the northbridge, and it stays at room tempurature, and it's overvolted too.

This is all and well if the cooler is decent, but if you must....

Zalman coolers have always treated me right. And you can shave some of the pins off in tight situations if it is called for.

This is all assuming you are not going to water cool, which is another story...later:)

Unlike the P4 or the new 64 bit AMD cpus, the Intel northbridge is just a bare core, so take care when cramming that cooler on there if you switch it. I had to put a lot more force than I would have liked on mine to get it on, but I got the NB-1 on there without any trouble and it's working fine now.
