Noob resloution question.

Im thinking about purchasing a 20-22 inch widescreen display for my gaming rig. Every single one ive looked at has a native or max resolution of 1680x1050. If Im actually in a game though can I kick the resolution of the game up higher? I have a BGF 8800 GTX in my box.

Im asking becuse I have a Sony 21 inch CRT now and Im almost certain I could have my OS running at 1600x1200 but go into my games and kick them up past 1600x1200, maybe I just thought I was doing that.

Can anyone confirm if you can kick games up past the monitors native or max resolution?

23 incher s-ips sony..or apple 1920x1200..or a very expensive 22 incher professional eizo lcd also at ..1920x1200... there is always the cheap dell 2407wfp.. running lcd display at more than native res..depends on monitor.. is either not possible or not worth the trouble or a section of the larger display.
