noob question: form factor?

what do you think is smallest possible form factor capable of reliably driving high quality graphics on a 28" + monitor, for gaming and video editing?

I wouldn't go any smaller than microATX just because of the given PCIe slots (at least dual x16s).

I would go with an ITX... and get either a 2gb or 3gb card. Intel all the way for what you are wanting to do, or go Bulldozer.

You could easily do it on a mITX -- the real question is how many add on cards (i.e. pcie slots) do you need and how much ram do you need (if you need 32GB, you'll have to go mATX).

If you do not plan to overclock the cpu and just run it stock and are fine with using onboard sound alone then a mITX mobo will do the job fine. If you want to add a seperate sound card and/or other cards or want to overclock the cpu then a mATX mobo will do that better. Also remember case size also determines how big(longer) of a GPU you can fit inside it. mATX SFF cases will allow for bigger(longer) GPU. Better case cooling with the mATX SFF cases generally too.

lol, I remember building an ATX system years ago, and I thought 4GB was a lot.

you never know I'm running 16GB in my mITX box right now, and it's complete overkill.

Skott's point about pcie slots (sound card in particular) is certainly more germane
