noob question about PSU's

I have a new Seasonic X-1250. I haven't hooked it up to anything because I'm building my new rig piece by piece and awaiting the Ivy-E CPU launch. When I plugged in my PSU, the fan didn't move at all. Is this normal? Do I need a load to even have the fan go on or did I just get a dud? Thanks for any replies.

From the conclusions page of the HardOCP review of the Seasonic X-1250:

"With the unit not operating in Hybrid mode during our load tests, this unit was only audible truly during our full load tests. If you include the Hybrid Fan mode you have the potential for this unit to be completely silent for the vast majority of the time you use this unit as the fan will not start until ~20-25% load or somewhere north of 250W."

The box should have included a slip of paper that warns the user that the fan doesn't always run.

If you didn't hook it up to anything, how did you turn it on? If you don't even know that you shouldn't operate a PSU without load, I don't suppose you shorted the correct pins at the ATX plug, did you?

It's normal that it doesn't turn on until you hit your computers power switch. You can jump pins on the ATX connector of the power supply to turn it on. Try a www seach for "psu jump" if you would like to know how.

I was jumping the gun with plugging in the psu just to see the fan go around. I'll have to wait to see how it reacts under a load. Patience is a virtue that I am apparently lacking. Thanks for the replies.

This doesnt matter any more.

Op, the fan will start up once it needs to.
Your PSU is very efficient so doesnt waste electricity much.
It produces very little heat unless under heavy load.
