Originally, there was only one ATA (AT Attachment, a reference to the IBM AT PCs) standard, that was a 16 bit paralell (hence the P in PATA) interface, 40 pin cable, etc. This standard went through several revisions as drives continued to get bigger and faster. Over time, it came to be known as IDE, or Integrated Drive/Device electronics, as the drive controller, rather than being an add in card, was actually on the drive itself. ATA functioned as an interface between the drive controller and the host system. That's why a system has an ATA host and ATA ports, not an ATA controller - the controllers for the drives are built into the drives.
Western Digital, with their drive to be different, launched one of the new ATA standards before it was ratified, under a different name, EIDE (Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics). I can't remember which ATA version it was exactly, Google if you want to find out, it was many years ago. WD markets their PATA drives as EIDE to this day. However, the official spec is ATA, and that is used by all of the makers, including WD, they just spell it differently.
Now that we have two flavors of ATA (paralell and serial), it is necessary to distinguish the two, hence PATA and SATA. IDE does refer to certian versions of the (P)ATA standard, but PATA is the technically correct term.
