Just got an XFX 6950 2GB last week. Installed it and everything has been fine. Went to play a game and I can hear a pretty loud kinda whine noise when the intro comes on. It doesn't do it during actual gameplay or the cut scenes so it's not a huge deal but it's still very annoying.

I did unlock the shaders but have not overclocked, etc.

Any idea on what this might be? I think it's coming from the video card but not 100% sure. It's definitely not coming from a case/cpu fan. I figure it's probably video related since it starts exactly as the intro scene starts and goes away as soon as it gets to the menu.

Yeah i have this issue too with my 6950 2Gb XFX card. I've been told it is coil whine, and i only hear it when i run furmark. I do not hear it at all in any other situations. Its one of those things where (for me) with the XFX warranty, if i ever hear it while gaming i'll RMA it but if i only hear it in synthetic benchmark tests then i keep it and dont worry about it.

I havent really gotten a answer but i would like to know if everyone with 2Gb XFX 6950's has this problem or if it is just a few a batch with the issue.
 
I also have this problem but im using a his 6950 reference. It's a few days old but it only happens in msi kombustor. Does not happen in 3dmark11, metro2033, or heaven benchmark.
 
I remember reading about a PSU maker that uses something in the power that leads to the graphics card. Damn, I wish I could remember more about it. If remember I'll come back. Anyone have any idea about what i'm talking about?
 
I sent an email to XFX. I am thinking of also calling Newegg tomorrow and seeing if they would possibly send me a replacement. Although, if others are having the same issue then I don't know what to do. I am seriously having second thoughts about not going with NVidia.
 
Sorry to hear about the noise. I've heard of some people experiencing this before (as others have mentioned, the coil noise) but I've got a 6950 2gb that I bought from launch, and the only noise I have encountered was when the plastic covering started peeling and getting sucked into the intake fan. I like to keep stuff as pristine as possible, so I left the plastic on, but it falls off on its own.

Also, I never run anything like Kombuster or Furmark since I think they're ridiculous in that your card will never see a load on them like those. 3dmark11, Heaven 2.1, and lots of gaming (BFBC2, Borderlands, Civ5, TDU2, Bulletstorm) and I've never had any noise problems (other than the sound of the fan, hence why I'll be going water-cooling very soon).

Hopefully this is something that you can easily RMA if it really bothers you. Weird that it only happens during the intro (which should be a canned video, no real processing power being used), but at least during the important parts it's not distracting/annoying.
 
My XFX 6950 has coil whine when running furmark at 0xaa (maximum load, something no game will ever use). As the image rotates the whine changes pitch, due to the sllight variation in load. This is normal for almost all graphics cards when running at extreme load. If you do some googling you'll find both ATI and nVidia users complaining about this for the past 10 years.

Normal gaming or furmark at 8xaa and there is no whine.

PSU is a Corsair HX650. I'm replacing this with a Seasonic X-760 on Tuesday, so will update then if the whine disappears (unlikely imo).
 
Thanks. Glad to know it's not totally uncommon. But I've never heard it out of way less expensive video cards. It just stinks to pay alot of $ (to me anyway) and to have this distraction.

I'm gonna try and go through newegg but I've already cut the UPC and sent it off for the rebate. I would like to just swap it out with another new one. I figure going through XFX pretty much guarantees me a refurbished unit. :(

My 6970s do it as well but only in furmark....first time I started furmark up it kind of concerned me cause of how loud both of them were doing it and how it would change pitch as the fuzzy donut rotated...I found that to be odd.
