hi there. im new to these forums and could use some tips on lowering the noise my computer makes. all of the fans in my computer are after market and supposedly "silent" or very quiet. the problem is that it is still loud. i cant afford water cooling so that is out of the question.

1 gb ddr 400 ram
athlon 64 x2 4400 + (not oc'ed)
thermaltake silent 430 watt psu (this part is actuall quiet)
evga geforce 7900 gs ko with iceberq fan
80 gig ide harddrive
thermaltake golden orb cpu cooler (rated at 16 db)
 
The #1 noise maker in a computer are the hard drives and CPU fans.....especially old hard drives. Replace the hard drives with Samsung Spinpoints and the CPU fan with a quiet cooling block (refer to the cooling forums for that....I'm a WC'ing guy, it's not my area). That right there will knock out 70% of your noise.

8 months ago I decided to silence my computer. After weeks of investigating I found that noise emanated from the following components (listed loudest to softest):

Hard drives
CPU fan
Chipset fan (ASUS board....notoriously loud)
Video card fan (GeForce 6800 at the time)
PSU
Case fans

If you're really curious start up your computer without each component and compare the noise. You'll be shocked at the misinformation these forums feed people about where the noise really comes from. Take a look at my sig for info on what I did to silece my computer.....as I type the buzz of my monitor is completely droning out the sound of my computer. When I kill the monitor I can't hear a thing unless I press my ear up to the side of the case......and for what it's worth, I have the stock P180 fans everyone complains about.
 
I've noticed basically the same pattern.

The most noise in the immediate area is coming from my SATA hard drive. It's not incredibly loud, but it's enough. My 4 case fans seem absolutely silent, but I won't know for sure unless I unplug them all.

Next is my water cooler pump/rad. It seems to rattle, and the 80mm fan on it seems to suck many asses. I tried to replace it, but I stripped a screw and don't feel like drilling it out quiet yet.

Then it's the PSU.

Oh, and I'll tell ya; before I went with a WC setup, the CPU fan was loud! I had an aftermarket one, too, and if I didn't use the fan control knob to set it to low, it would be unbearable.

Optical drives can be pretty loud too, but I only have an external DVD drive.

EDIT: Oh, and as mentioned above, the stock fan on a video card can be horrifying. I unplugged the one on my 7900GS, but left it on for the heatsink, then stuck two 120mm fans right up next to it. Not only did it drop my temps, but now it's not a noisy son of a bitch.
 
thanks. i have narrowed it down too the cpu cooler and the chipset fan (which because ecs is lame) is irreplaceable. i have i had the exact cpu fan previously, then sold it, got another. i think this ones faulty. it makes an obnoxious whirring and humming noise.
