My problem and laptop history.. A year ago I had the power supply fixed, the jack inside was broken off, which is common with this model compaq (2100us). About 6 months ago my laptop screen went out. You can still see the screen if you hold it correctly in the light, or by holding a lamp close to the screen. I think the power and screen is related since the power went out when I jiggled the screen and now the screen is out.. The laptop is in perfect working order except for the (backlight?) screen. I brought a monitor in and connected it and it was working perfectly, no errors for 6 months. However during the past month I have gotten the blue screen of death with Kernel_inpage_ x00000007a errors. I assumed this was a wireless card issue when I stopped getting the blue screen after uninstalling and reinstalling the card. No blue screen for a week then when I was embedding some youtube code into mypsace and a webpage, my computer became overloaded and froze. I had to cold boot it back up. It flashed a blue screen for 1/2 second (not long enough to read) and then rebooted. It would not boot up in any mode, it went to the blue screen and rebooted, even when I tried safe more. So I formatted the hard drive. After the format everything is working great except there is no video when trying to play avi type files, the only video I can see is from embedded type media, like youtube. I have eliminated a codec issue since the video will play on the laptop screen (holding a lamp to it) but not the external monitor. I tried connecting a different monitor but this monitor also has no video. I tried going to device manager and removing display adapters (radeon igp 340m) and also went to the ATI website and tried to download and install some software with updated drivers but I got an "INF error, No Video Card". I do not know a lot about hardware, but it sounds like the 'video out' of the laptop is bad or the whole video card? To be honest I'm not even sure where the video card is, so if this requires new hardware I will need to take it in for repair. I am using the computer now, the only errors are no video, so it would/could not be the motherboard, hopefully? I want to get the cheapest option repaired since this is a play/home laptop used by my children and not something I use for business. I can either get the laptop screen fixed and stop using external monitors or once I know what the problem is with the external monitors, get that fixed. I am guessing new video card? I am using Xp Home with Sp2. Thanks for Any Help!!
