No sound with MSNBC and CNN videos

I had hoped that the final (in my case SP2) of IE7 would solve the mystery of my missing sound from MSNBC and CNN news videos; especially galling that the commercials play fine and then the news goes silent on MSNBC. All other web videos play just fine; just these 2 give me the silent treatment. I've googled about and found similar stories and various treatments, usually involving reinstalling particular codecs, and sometimes the sound returns for a short while, but leaves again. Is there a fix for this I'm not aware of? XP Pro SP2, w/IE7 SP2.
