Picked up a decent used 5.1 receiver and speaker setup. Cant get sound when using a line cord to the Audio In on the back of the receiver (L & R, white & red)

Funny thing, it works fine if i plug in my phone. Is my Nokia N95 better then my mobo? LOL

Asus P6T
Sony DAV-BC150

Thanks,

is the board's sound:

-unmuted
-set to a good level
-actually outputting a signal
-configured correctly
-connected correctly

Yup

When going through the configuration options i can hear sound from the the front speakers but not the rear surround speakers. Im wondering if i need to use a coax:RCA out cable to get this to work correctly

you've connected stereo analog audio to the receiver, it will only pass a stereo analog signal to the receiver as a result

if you want multi-ch audio you will need a multi-ch source, or real-time encoding scheme, and a multi-ch capable connection that is compatible with both sides, such as S/PDIF, 6ch analog (which would be 3x TRS to 6x RCA), HDMI, etc

I have been looking for such S/PDIF and have not been able to find those. At least not through the usualy places i look.

Multi-ch source = computer (correct?)
The Receiver has R & L Audio In Only, but like i said my phone will play just fine through this. I would assume that this end is fine and that the computer is the issue.

I will keep looking for the cable to make this work. Will software be needed too?

from the user manual, your receiver is not able to accept a 5.1 input signal, it only accepts stereo input, and therefore can only play back stereo signals (5.1 is likely only accessible as a feature of the onboard DVD player)

based on this, you cannot connect S/PDIF or some other multi-ch carrier

a multi-ch source would be something like a DVD (something with a 5.1 AC-3 or DTS track), or software using an encoding method such as Dolby Digital Live (which can encode up to 6 channels of audio into an AC-3 signal to pass out via S/PDIF)

if the receiver has something like Dolby Pro Logic, you may enable this to simulate surround sound, however it is not the same as six discrete channels

Well then i guess the issue is getting the sound from the computer to come across as surround.

Found a newer driver and installed VLC for more output configuration options. I know i can get this to output as stero and fill the rest. Im just getting lost with everything

its not a setting on the computer

look through the user manual for the Sony and find how to enable something like Pro Logic, Neo:6, etc

if no such options exist, it doesn't have those features, and will reproduce stereo as stereo

It has pro logic and i have tried turning that on. What gets me and its why i think that it can be done, is that right now i have my nokia hooked up using the same cable and i have perfect sound coming from all speakers.

I don't doubt what you say, its just that if the phone can (with no modification) then why cant the computer

it is not surround sound, I assure you, you are not getting six discrete channels with your configuration

without seeing what you've got setup I couldn't really explain further, although if the computer is configured for stereo output via a stereo connection, enabling Pro Logic on that input is all you can do
