My case has 2 hdd bays, and 2 3.5 floppy bays right on top of those. Right now i have 2 ide drives that take up the bottom ide bay, and bottom floppy bay. I'm getting 2 new sata drives, that will be my raid block. If i put them in the top bays in either area, i will have a solid block of 4 hdds, under general strain. I think this is really shitty for cooling, but i can't find any other way to have my windows (c:) data (E:) and then my 2 raid drives (I:) in at the same time so that i can boot and then move crap from one disk to the other. Pics of what i mean:

Can i mount a 3.5 hdd in a 5.2" bay? I've seen people use rubberbands and bunjees to mount hdds to dampen the vibration. Is there any special precausion i would need if i mounted my drives in the cd bays?

Also, can a system using an abit a7v600-x use raid'd sata drives and 2 ide drives at the same time?

Yes.
There are attachments that work for both floppy drives and hard drives to mount them in a 5.25" bay.
All my internal drives including my removeable drives are in 5.25" bays.
The removeable drives install like CD-ROM drives.
Most retail floppy drives ship with 5.25" attachement brackets that you can also use for HDs.
 
I think i have one of those brackets. Will the rubber bands not work though? I aim for cheap as possible when i buy stuff, so if the rubber bands wont melt or anything ill probably go with them.

ok good. My other question though, can i use ide and sata raid at the same time? i have enough ports, i just dont know if my comp will recognize it/
 
It's really up to the boards bios mostly. On mine you have to select Enhanced to recognize both. I added an 80GB caviar, and it was recognized instantly. Faster than the raid array. Gotta be sure, not to put an OS on that drive, or use GAG to choose OS's. Itchin to delve into Linux once I get this rig dialed in. Read the manual that came with you're motherboard, and the upgrades to bios at manufacturers site.
 
Drive rails are like $5 a set; don't even try to skimp on that; you'll regret it.

Id agree with that, isolating a HDD from vibration and to dampen any noise is one thing, and not really as simple as a few "rubberbands",
they are generally quite sophisticated little rigs, skimping of doing it right is another

Ill add that to the bootmanager list in the Advanced HDD Issues Linkfarm

Boot Managers can have their own pitfalls however
best to have a comprehensive understanding of partitions and exactly what a boot manager is doing before using one with critical data

I perfer to employ a simpler strategy that allows dynamic physical configuration ;)
Its a real pain when you have a boot manager "adopt" a new drive you really didnt want to have included
Reminds me I need to write yet another FAQ on bootmanagers :p

I was going to build one of the suspension bays in my 5.2 bay using rubber bands or elastic cables from those really small bungees. Is there some trick to doing this, or should i be alright if i mimick the pattern of cables used in the suspension stuff that people buy?
