Hi, I was running a fine working computer and then this afternoon I attempted to install a 300GB SATA drive in it. I tried to reboot and there was nothing, no video, no beep, no post no nothing.
The power light on the mobo is on (P800SE) the CPU fan is working (P4 3.0) the drives sound like they're spinning, the CD-RW and DVD-RW drive light up and the video card (Radeon 9200) has lights flashing too.
So it seems that there is power, but like the topic says, no post screen, no beep, and nothing else.

I really would appreciate any help. I tried resetting the cmos, reinstalled the cmos battery, uninstalled the video card and tried rebooting after each step. The ram is seated right also. (2 X 512)

If anyone could help me find a solution to this it would be great. I don't know if it's the mobo or not, or how to test for it. Someone mentioned that I should reset the cpu but I don't know why that would make a difference at this point.

What PSU are you using, sounds like it may be getting power but not enough.
 
First. Uninstall the new drive.
If it works then either you have a dead ? drive or the PSU cannot supply enough power .
If it works then try stripping it down to min specs to reduce the load on the PSU then attaching the new drive.

I removed the new drive and set it back up to the original installation. It still won't POST. There's power going through each component too.
It says it's a 350 W psu.
 
Strip it down and reseat everything.
Maybe you've just nudged one of the power connectors, etc out of allinement.

If that does not work have you a spare known good PSU you can swop in.
Or have you a multimeter that you can check your voltages with.
If the 12v rail is up & the 5v is down then all fans, etc get power but the mobo cannot post.

Remove all cards, memory, etc.
Disconect all drives, both power connectors, etc.
Now just replace vid card, one stick of memory, plug in both power connectors and the vid card if it needs it.
Will it post ?
If it won't then it one of 5 things wrong. Psu, mobo, vid card, memory, cpu.
If not then remove vid card and see if you get the bios beep code for bad vid card ?
If not then replace vid card and remove memory. Any beep code now.
If nothing then you may be looking at either a bad psu, mobo or cpu ?

If it posts then rebuild it slowly & keep checking it still posts after adding new parts.
If your lucky you'll be able to rebuild it and have it still working.

Before I do this, I'm wondering if this makes sense because it was working fine before I tried the new installation. I didn't change anything else. I've heard of this explanation for people doing new builds but when the machine was already running smoothly does a malfunctioning component all of a sudden make sense?

This man speaks the truth, follow the advice and you will find your problem. Been repairing pc's for almost 8 years and this is the basis for all hardware troubleshooting.
 
I appreciate the input Liquid but again, given that everything was working fine, I tried installing an hd, it didn't work, so I re-installed the old hd, why would the culprit be a different component?
I'm trying to troubleshoot it from that point of view.

I used to troubleshoot from that POV awhile ago too, but i found it to take so much more time. Sometimes just replacing the old part doesn't fix the problem, there are so many factors involved in building/upgrading a PC that its best to just start from the bare minimum. Saves time and is much easier.
 
You may have shorted something else in the process. They are simply going by the books as this seems to be the best option for you right now. If nothing else is working you might as well begin to troubleshoot and you might find out what component is the culprit. It may just be as simple as you accidently hitting something that just needs to be reset into its socket or slot. By going through the (tedious I know) steps you might find your solution.
 
I'm totally stumped. I disconnected all the drives and still nothing. No beeps, nothing. :confused:

I'll have to agree with this post. This is the only way to troubleshoot. Been doing this method for years as well.

As for why it happened? Random sh!@ happens every day. Perhaps the sunspots got to your system finally.... :D
 
talking about random sh!t, one day I just couldn't turn on the computer after shutting it down normally the day before. I tried everything and in the end, it turned out to be my mobo. It worked for a grand total of 30hours since I installed it and then died for no apparent reason :D It was Abit mobo tho.

Btw, my symptoms were exactly like urs - lights up, drives and fans spin up but no beeps/post ;) I'd say, get another mobo and try everything in it. If it works, it means ur mobo gone south :cool:
 
Could be bad memory. Try running MemTest98+ for about a day, or while your gone for a while.
 
Looks like it was the memory. I have two sticks of 512 and if I boot with one in and not the other then it's no problem but as soon as I put the other stick in nothing happens. No Post.
I tried the other slot with some different ram and it posted so it's not the slot either, it's definetely the ram.
I can't figure out why it kicked out at this point but it just must be flaky.
Phew.

Someone put this in the "Solved" pile. I've been reading a ton of threads from people with the same problem and maybe this can help them out. I was amazed how many people have dealt with the same thing and many had the same mobo as I did. Odd.
Anyways, thanks for the suggestions.
