No More Cans of Compressed Air For Me

I bought This Air Compressor this past weekend and it works awesome for blowing out the PC and everything else really.

This may not be a revelation for some of you but I have been using canned compressed air since forever and I just got tired of it. Anyways this thing is on sale if some of you are still using canned air I highly recommend it.

be carefull.. I work at compusa as a tech and we use a compressor to blow out peoples PCs but... ours has a filter on the intake and out the out to make sure no water gets blown out... Air compressors are notorious for having condensation on the inside... higher preassure means lower water retention and there for you get water buildup inside the take...

if and or when it sprays out and gets all over your mobo you'll need some isopropyle rubbing alchohol to get it off...

drian your compresser regularly.. and get some 3M antistatic spray... the AC can cuase a decent amount of static build up...

this is what we do and it works well...

You know I'm glad you mentioned that, I was going to ask about that. It seems like I have seen an inline filter or something that will remove the condensation. Do they make such a thing? This compressor has a drain in the middle so I have been draining it each time after each use and then again before each use.

I'm not sure what the 3M antistatic spray is for, you mean for the Computer?

I use a bulb type device called the Giottos Rocket Air. Just a bit of rubber really. Works well. Seems silly paying for air. xD

Also resist the temptation to use the air compressor to spin your fans up to ten zillion RPMs. I had to replace a HSF after yielding to the urge. (The stock HSF got replaced with the finest, cheapest $10 Dick Smith model I could find.)

Anyone ever used a bottle of nitrogen to blow out their computer? Any minuses to it?

I haven't tried it, but I think that nitrogen would be an excellent choice. Unlike air, nitrogen does not contain moisture. One thing about the canned dusters is they they are not canned air. That is one of my biggest pet peeves: people calling dusters "canned air". They are diflouroethane (usually). They use that chemical because it does not contain moisture.

its true, any good autobody place will use an inline water trap so moisture doesnt get mixed with paint.. thats all you need

I must re-iterate what this gent has posted. Moisture is a BIG problem!

Make sure you are using a good, properly installed filter system and drain the tank daily.

Oh, and I'd skip on the automatic oilers :)

30 years ago when I was a car mechanic, I saw a guy spin up a front wheel bearing with an air hose.

It exploded and sent him to the hospital for emergency surgery to have a couple of the rollers removed from his upper arm.

One more warning. Make sure all your connections stay tight.

Air compressor hoses have two purposes in life:

1. To assist you in directing air in the desired location.
2. To pop you in the nuts when the end blows off the hose.

These things are built with ball-seaking radar installed.

So these inline water traps should be readily available, auto parts store maybe?

yep the mini one is the one we use... also the anti static spray is for the PC... it removes static electricity from the air moving by and moving dust.. spray it before you turn it on. it also keeps dust from sticking to the electronics.....

The mini one will be sufficient for most who read this thread.
With that said, I use the larger unit above with reusable filter. Clean dry air is essential when painting etc ...

Thanks guys, I'll look into the mini filter locally otherwise I'll get it from that link provided.

So you spray this stuff on all internal PC parts just before you turn it on, every time?

Another option is to purchase a portable shop vac and use the blower feature to dust out your computer case. Some of the better ones put out alot of air (more than my small air compressor).

You'll also need a leader hose and any necessary adapters. Check the input and output fitting sizes.

Most of what you have is probably 1/4" NPT. Most of these filters have 3/8" NPT or larger, requiring adapters.

-Larry
Excellent point. Should have mentioned that in my post.

The smaller "MINI AIR LINE FILTER" uses 1/4" NPT fittings. The larger one will require adapters.

They have filters for $10 at Walmart, $20 at Lowes (they will pricematch Walmart), and $12 or so at Home Depot.

I have an old mighty mite vacuum which allows me to hook the hose on the exhaust. I take a dirty pc into our lobby area by the elevators when no-one is around and blow them out.

and i always drain and spray my hand a little bit before spraying out the PSU, fans, mobo, and hard drive area, then the entire case.

(amazing what u can find built up inside your PSU, take the time if its been awhile and take the PSU out, and take cover off and give it a good cleaning, as always be gentle somewhat, dont want to break anything off.)

the Cans have always sucked and after my first use, i knew there was a better way of cleaning and actually getting all the dust out!!!

if u have cans lying around dont throw away, use them to sneak up on un-suspecting victims and spray them on neck, it always works!!!(avoid the ears or nose or mouth jackasses, put that here for the dummys.)

That comment made my day. Thank you.
