I have a 24 core AMD system that I have been running for a month now. Has the musky Ubuntu setup on it. Version 12.04 - been running perfect. I noticed today, it started coming up with the following:

[01:38:50] + Attempting to get work packet
[01:38:50] Passkey found
[01:38:50] - Will indicate memory of 16047 MB
[01:38:50] - Connecting to assignment server
[01:38:50] Connecting to http://assign.stanford.edu:8080/
[01:38:51] Posted data.
[01:38:51] Initial: 0000; + No appropriate work server was available; will try again in a bit.
[01:38:51] + Couldn't get work instructions.
[01:38:51] - Attempt #10 to get work failed, and no other work to do.
Waiting before retry.

I have restarted the system and still get the same issue. All my other folders are running fine. If I browse to http://assign.stanford.edu:8080/ I get the old OK which indicates I should be able to connect. Can anyone shed some light? Thanks!
 
Did you try and delete the "work" folder and restart the client?

I know I get an error similar to this when Im using the "test" WU and the WU crashes. I usually have to delete the entire WU and start over.

Did the last WU crash by chance? Or was it lost somehow? Or did it complete and then this error started?
 
I am pretty sure it had completed and submitted the last WU and then started this. I did go in, delete the work directory and restart the client. Still no go.

Are you aware of any network issues with your system? When you contacted the assignment server via your browser, were you using that machine to do so? If not, are you able to contact (ping, browse, telnet/ssh, etc.) other locations from that machine?
 
Networking is all good. I can browse and ping the site on that computer. I can also browse to other web sites on that computer without issue. I have three other folders all running fine...
 
hmmm... what about a firewall? Anything active on that machine that might be blocking the client from contacting the internet?
 
Everything is good on the firewall... like I said, other units running fine... just this one for some reason...
 
Well, what I was more getting at was the application firewall on the local machine. Ubuntu has one, but I don't know if it's active at all times or what the case is. I remember playing around with it on one of my Ubuntu systems at one point for some reason or another.
 
The Ubuntu firewall is off by default, the reason being there is no reason to have a firewall if there are no services the firewall can protect.

It may sound like a cliché to ask you to delete everything in the work folder and restart, but it fixes 99% of all problems.

The message you are getting seems to say that they have no work units for you. After all, your client does connect to the server and it does post info to the server.

Please post client version and any settings you have set up for the client.
Note that we do not want your passkey, that thing is private ;)
 
The client is the version download when following musky's guidelines, 6.34 I believe. Here is a copy of my config:

is this the machine/hdd i sent you? also, just wanted to make sure you removed your passkey when you pasted your config, but if not, you will want to specify your passkey :)

First thing I told him to do lol! Said it didnt help though...

Can you hop in our IRC some time today? We may be able to help you a lot more efficiently then just random postings here.

Yes, it is that system - been running like a champ since I powered it up - just started doing this yesterday. And yes, I have te passkey - just deleted for security. :)

Have you made any change to your router lately? I.E: blocking Proxy ..... ?
 
Another thing you can try .. it's used to work :D ...
Delete work folder, queue.dat, machineid, unitinfo.txt ... files

EUREKA!!! sbinh wins internet cookies. Delete those additional files cleared whatever the issue was and the system downloaded a new WU and is working away!

Sorry for chiming in post resolution.

It's actually just the queue.dat file that needs removal in case of repeated "no appropriate
work server available" issues.

Sometimes it gets corrupted or otherwise malformed and client sends garbage to the server
(which results in the messages you've witnessed).

Theoretically, queue.dat should not affect the way the client reports the machine to the
assignment server (as it's only the queue, right?) but somehow it does...

Glad it got resolved...Tear was the main reason I said to hop in IRC ^^. If you ever have problems, we have a good 30-40 people in irc willing to help at almost any hour of the day...

Just a heads up. :D
